Arizona Special Olympics set with 12000 participants
More than 12,000 mentally handicapped youngsters and adults will compete in the Arizona Special Olympics over the weekend. The event, developed in 1968 as a joint venture of the Chicago Parks Department and the Joseph P Kennedy Jr Foundation, features track and field, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, bowling and wheelchair events. Medals go to the top three in each event, ribbons for others, and each competitor is paired with a hugger at the finish line for encouragement.
