Sun Powered Irrigation System Opens in Arizona
Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance unveils what it calls the world’s largest solar powered irrigation system at a 76 000 acre ranch in Gila Bend Arizona. Battelle Memorial Institute developed the 50 horsepower pump capable of 10000 gallons per minute with 5500 square feet of parabolic collectors tracking the sun. The system heats water by solar heat to power a freon turbine with no energy storage. It can deliver up to 5.6 million gallons in June over 9.2 hours and may be adapted for crop drying and greenhouse heating.
