Experimental Safety Vehicle aims to reduce highway deaths
The Department of Transportation funds an Experimental Safety Vehicle program to improve crash resistance and occupant protection. Fairchild Industries tested an ESV in Phoenix with AMF Inc also testing a unit. 12 prototypes may be awarded to the winner. Goals include 50 mph head on survivability, 30 mph side impacts, 75 mph rear impacts, 60–70 mph rollovers, 10 mph frontal and rear collisions with no damage, 155 feet stopping distance from 60 mph in a 12 foot lane, 30 to 70 mph acceleration in 12 seconds, and a 180 degree turn without overturning along with improved visibility and 250 mile range at 60 mph.
