High winds uprooted tumbleweeds piling to six feet in vacant areas, creating headaches for residents and business owners alike as debris swept across upwind districts. The gusts demonstrated the old west symbol’s impact on the town.
State School Supt. W W Dick and Scottsdale board member Steward Flaschen clashed over whether the district could have received one million dollars in federal funds since 1959. Dick backed a million dollar loss estimate, citing a 1959 $300 000 P L 815 denial and urging an eligibility survey before any vote. The adjourned meeting left the issue unresolved as residents demand action on the funds.
Willard Greene of the U S Weather Bureau station on Mockingbird Lane in Paradise Valley reports a peak wind of 51 mph early yesterday afternoon. He noted winds varied from 20 to 40 mph for most of the afternoon.
Former Tucson Mayor Don Hummel told Democrats that Arizona should accept federal aid when local funds are insufficient and that downtown business declines stem from the city’s refusal of urban renewal. He criticized tax policy shifts and subsidy stances by the current administration.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee released a report showing more than 20 congressmen received campaign contributions in 1960 from lobbyist John O'Donnell of Washington. He worked for Philippine war damage claims and sugar interests, earning about 150000 for the Philippine damage claim bill and up to 300000 from Philippine religious orders. Attorney Charles Brewer charged Scottsdale misrepresented signatures in its 1961 annexation of an area with 20 000 residents. Iranian twins Mansour and Nasser Haghighi, 26, of Tehran, had second degree burglary charges dropped by Justice of the Peace Harold Holcomb due to lack of evidence. They were arraigned on the same burglary charge for a Griffin home in Chandler. A new complaint was filed after the hearing. The burglary reportedly occurred on November 8, 1962. The judge excluded a sheriff’s interview as evidence, ruling it a confession without proven crime. Prosecution tied rugs and items to Griffin, but defense argued no identifying marks linked to Griffin’s rugs. The twins remain jailed on combined bonds totaling $55,000 and face separate kidnapping charges with $50,000 and $5,000 bonds. Authorities may file additional Scottsdale area burglaries and an armed robbery in Frontier Town.

The Arizona Supreme Court disbarred Scottsdale attorney Robert E. Yount for keeping 948 dollars belonging to a client. Yount, a former Superior Court judge and Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce president, did not respond to bar charges and was ordered to cease practicing law.
