Eight-Engine B52s Bomb Viet Cong in Mekong Delta Campaign

Eight-engine B52s conducted rare strikes in the Mekong Delta aiming at Viet Cong hideouts amid weeklong forest fires. Initial Friday raids near Vinh Binh killed about 200 guerrillas, with further bombardment toward the edge of U Minh forest. A Khe Sanh C130 crash killed one civilian and injured five as wounded combatants and civilians crowded the runway. The Viet Cong declared a three day truce in four provinces near Cambodia, but both governments ignored it. Forest fires have displaced Viet Cong units and caused explosions near ammunition dumps, intensifying the conflict. In North Vietnam, F111A bombers joined the day’s operations, marking the jet’s first raids since March 30.
