Nineteen youths were arrested after a service station fight sparked a near riot as about 50 youths besieged the police station. Officers used mace to break up the melee. four more arrests followed in the night battle. One participant remained in critical condition with knife wounds.
The Arizona State Board of Medical Examiners ordered its attorney to pursue all legal action to prohibit Dr. Charles Keever from practicing medicine. Keever, 30, of Youngtown, has two prior abortion convictions and was under probation since 1965 for alcohol related charges. He was sentenced March 27 to two years in prison for an abortion performed on Mrs. Peggy Klein.
Two Allied model homes were broken into Friday night. A $150 king size bedspread was reported missing from one home. Police noted entry via a living room window at 8701 E Vista Dr. The adjacent house was also broken into but nothing else was taken.
Czech CTK agency issued then retracted a report that Soviet troops would be increased in Czechoslovakia this month. Four hours later the agency said the communique on troop strength was unfounded in light of changed facts. No further details were provided on behind the scenes developments. The move followed Kremlin crackdowns on the Czechoslovak press and population after anti-Soviet riots March 28-29.
East Maricopa League of Women Voters names new officers and board members including Mrs Warren Gentry of Scottsdale as a board member. The election results highlight continued community engagement and organizational leadership within the league.
President Nixon ordered a review of Johnson era Pacific air routes citing lack of economic viability. The CAB route changes exclude Braniff and Continental awards, keep Pan American Northwest and Trans World as primary U.S. carriers, and target co terminal points with disapproved Braniff and Northwest and Continental awards.
Five persons were injured in three rear end collisions reported by police. A 11:45 p.m. crash at 3214 N 76th St involved Tony Grill and Greg Thorpe with Thorpe cited for failure to control his vehicle. An earlier accident on Camelback Rd injured Leland Painton and Sharon Wagner. Magistrate Ed Boyle and Ken Robinson were cited for failure to control after a Shea Blvd incident.
At 9 35 p m two people were treated for cuts and bruises at Baptist Hospital after a collision at Granite Reef and Indian School Roads. Tai Shu Wan 39 of 7949 E Shea Blvd drove a pickup south on Granite Reef and Leroy Sundquist 31 of Phoenix drove a late model car west on Indian School Road Wan claimed a stop sign while Sundquist was on a through street Wan was cited for failure to yield Police said Wan’s pickup suffered about 600 damage and Sundquist’s car was a total loss
A Jordanian military spokesman said Israeli and Jordanian forces clashed for three hours near Al Manshiyah eight miles south of the Sea of Galilee with tanks and machine guns. He reported eight Israeli soldiers evacuated and no Jordanian casualties. An Israeli spokesman called the fighting routine and minor. Egypt claimed it hit top Israeli officers across the Suez Canal, injuring them with heavy artillery. Egyptian and Israeli accounts conflicted over Friday’s canal fighting with casualties disputed. Also noted was a spring microscopy seminar by the Arizona Medical Laboratory Association in Tempe at 9:30 a.m.
Nancy Bernstein 35 of 5802 N 70th Pl died Friday at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. Her body was sent to Joliet Illinois for funeral and burial. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Friends Meeting House Phoenix. She was a Arizona State University student and a housewife. Survived by son Michael her father and mother Dr and Mrs J H Rubnitz Joliet Illinois two sisters Mrs Danny Hillman Joliet and Mrs William Stephens Sherman Oaks California.
Lynn E. Pruitt, 13, of 6302 N 85th St. dies Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital from a rare children's disease. Son of Harold H. and unnamed mother, he moved with family to Scottsdale last year from South Dakota. He was an Mohave School eighth grader in the school band. Services Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church with burial at Greenwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit at Messinger Mortuary.
Arizona reports 246 German measles cases in first quarter 1969, up from 176 a year earlier. Health officials warn of a possible nationwide epidemic within one to two years while noting no major Arizona problems expected this year. County campaigns active in 12 of 14 counties.
