In Fort Worth Texas a young boy wearing a Batman shirt was brought to police headquarters after a disturbance. He refused to reveal his name, declared I am Batman, and charged at a detective before his mother collected him and took him home.
UPI reports newly named astronaut Stuart A Roosa visiting Tucson for Easter with his family before returning to Edwards AFB California. Roosa 32 a Air Force captain and CU Colorado grad says he hopes to be on the first Apollo moon shot and trains in Houston after May 1.
Youths aided by Buddhist monks move through Saigon, smashing two U.S. official sedans and a police jeep, battles with Vietnamese paratroopers ensue, and two American vehicles are destroyed amid rising anti-American sentiment. UPI reports mobs threaten reporters and police in chaotic streets.
In Rome Pope Paul VI, in mourning red, carries a cross up Palatine Hill during the Good Friday rites and kisses a crucifix barefoot in St Mary Major. The solemn day sees silent bells, bare altars, and no Mass as Rome prepares for Easter and the 1964 Jerusalem procession.
Pinal County attorney Brumage today rejected reports he would seek to prove premeditation by Mrs. Becky Madden charged with killing her husband. Madden, a Paradise Valley resident, is arraigned April 22 in Apache Junction with a separate preliminary hearing set the same day. Madden is held on $10,000 bond and confined to Camelback Hospital after the March 25 death near Meanwhile Ranch north of Apache Junction.
Funeral services for Kelly Burnett are pending after his car plunged into the Old Crosscut Canal in Phoenix. Burnett, 4422 E Calle Turbin, died at Doctor’s Hospital about 30 minutes after the crash from chest injuries. He was a former radio bouncer and is survived by his wife Mary and one child.
In a whimsical preview, Rep Richard D McCarthy notes studies linking many crashes to drunken driving and sketches a bill for chemical tests. He cites a Capitol exhibit of an Italian safety car with features like sliding doors and an ejectible seat but notes no device to handle inebriated drivers.
Arizona lawmakers extend recess into a fifth week as they work toward ending the session. The House approved five bonding bills, with measures now headed to the governor. Senate bills would boost bonding authority for projects including university and junior college construction in Mesa and enderal and continue work of the state appraisal division. The outcome remains uncertain as lawmakers weigh reconsideration options.
Reclamation Commissioner Floyd Dominy told a Phoenix luncheon that water alone did not spur growth in central Arizona. He cited Roosevelt Dam’s 900 kilowatt generator as the first power source and called electricity vital to Salt River Project development and the anticipated Lower Colorado Basin Project approval.
Walter Hansgen of New Jersey died after a crash at Le Mans trials in Orleans France. The veteran driver, 46, did not regain consciousness after his Ford prototype struck a barrier at high speed. His wife Beatrice and two children were at his side as he died.
Three Scottsdale area residents will attend a three day study on state crime problems. Dickson Hartwell editor of the weekly Arizona n, Jack B. Huntress Paradise Valley mayor and Mrs James B. Phillips Scottsdale civic leader join 76 other Arizonans at the Eighth Arizona Town Hall at Castle Hot Springs Monday evening through Thursday.
Joseph S. Powers, 40, Scottsdale, held on $5,000 bond on charges of grand theft by false pretenses and obtaining money by the confidence game. He was arrested Thursday amid allegations he collected payments from Phoenix residents for American Income Life Insurance policies. Powers reportedly appeared in the case linked to a death inquiry around Bernice L. Baker, 50, whose Feb. 27 body was found northwest of Phoenix, with checks written and money accepted for an insurance policy.
