In Geneva the International Red Cross reports the Viet Cong has requested emergency aid from the Red Cross and the United Nations for six million war refugees under Communist control. Two million of these are children. UNICEF will initiate a fund drive to provide clothing drugs and fortified foods.
At the Connally bribery trial the March 23 1971 Nixon tape was played showing Connally urging higher federal price supports for raw milk. He argues for political reasons rather than moral or economic grounds.
Treasury Secretary William Simon told Congress the administration expects 9 percent unemployment this summer with a downturn in the second half of the year. He said the nation is recovering from the recession stronger than expected.
The wholesale price index fell six tenths of a percent in March led by lower farm commodity prices. It marks the first four month decline in 12 years and the index remains 12.44 percent higher than a year ago.
Mrs Mamie Eisenhower at Fort Gordon Army Medical Center shows very good progress from an intestinal bleeding episode that required admission March 27. Doctors report continued improvement but give no discharge date.
A 400 voter sample in Maricopa County found 74 percent recognized Ned Warren Sr. and 53 percent tied him to crime. Dr. Bruce Merrill testified at a hearing on whether Warren’s bribery case should be open to the public, noting Warren’s high recognition and unusual distrust. The forecast calls for mostly sunny weather with mid 70s highs.
President Ford said the United States faced serious setbacks in Indochina and the Middle East but would not retreat from international commitments. He pledged humanitarian aid for civilian refugees in South Vietnam and urged Congress to authorize renewed aid, stressing readiness to defend allies and keep the Stars and Stripes aloft.
Arizona education committee voted 5-4 to extend the deadline for district reorganization plans from July 1 to January 1 and to push full implementation to 1978. A $30,000 study fund was approved for Maricopa and Pima Counties as part of the bill, which keeps the plan alive amid repeal opposition.
Scottsdale developer Duane Fifer outlines Independance Square a 48 four Plex senior community on 20 acres north of Shea Boulevard west of Scottsdale Road. The project includes 24 hour nursing staff, personal apartments and meals with state licensing. Estimated cost is five million dollars with gardens around each unit.
City official Terry Phemister says all construction in the Downtown Redevelopment Area should finish by mid October. Projects include Pepperwood Land and Development office and retail complex and three restaurants by Thomas Development Co. Other sites progress with Mercado Verde finances and Doubletree Inns hotel on Indian School Road.
Town council weighs a zoning ordinance limiting exterior lighting to three feet above grade for sports facilities. Commission chair Bonnell argues the rule is impractical for tennis courts and raises concerns from neighbors about heat and noise, citing APS and American Lawn Tennis Association guidance.
