A 70 year old Georgia planter testifies to relief from back pain after using Dr Kilmer’s Swamp Root. He credits the remedy with restoring sleep and health and recommends it to others in need. The letter is sworn before a notary in 1909.
Dr. from Rocky Mount N C will visit Scotland Neck on the third Wednesday of each month at the hotel to treat diseases of the ear nose and throat and to fit equipment for these conditions.
At the North Carolina Baptist Laymen's Convention in Durham March 17 19 1914 Judge John Aates proposed a resolution urging General Assembly action to prohibit whiskey sale for beverage purposes in the state. The resolution passed unanimously as Anti Saloon League secretary R L Davis spoke on enforcing existing laws and aligning with Mississippi style shipment prohibitions.

Travis unopposed for chairman of the Corporation Commission and several Superior Court Judges, including Bond, Whedbee, Allen, Lyon, Devin, Adams, Harding, Webb, Ferguson and Justice, likely to be reelected as terms expire January first.

The North Carolina Conference for Social Service in Raleigh adopts resolutions urging city league organization, adult literacy campaigns, expanded economic education, compulsory vaccination, a civic service week, farm women clubs, uniform child albor laws, parole reform, and stricter rent oversight. The group reports ~1000 members and calls public support for these social welfare measures.
Dr H K Carroll notes a net increase of 618000 in church membership in 1913 with Methodists gaining 220000, Roman Catholics 212500, Baptists 94600, Presbyterians 45600, Lutherans 36100, Episcopalians 16560, and others. Totals cited: Roman Catholics 13099534, Methodists 7125069, Baptists 5922622, Lutherans 2338722, Presbyterians 2027593, Disciples 1519360, Protestant Episcopals 907407, Congregational 718310. about 54 million Christians in US churches. Jewish community adds ~2 million more. Christian Scientists provide 85096 in 1912 with no 1913 figures.

Farmers Union members across the county prepare to attend the Halifax convention on Saturday April 11. State Vice President Dr J M Templeton will give an outstanding address in Halifax County. Many talks by county officers will follow and about 75 women are expected to attend. Membership rose by 89 in the first half of March with nine new initiates at Glenview and 15 at Hardee Local. Local officers C Stuart and W C Myrick are praised as among the best in the state. On to Halifax is the watchword.
The Charlotte Observer recalls Dick Morse the street evangelist whose warnings in the 1890s mobilized ministers and cleaned streets by banishing saloons and closing gambling rooms. Today a new evangelistic wave in Independence Square honors his seed sown years ago.
