Philadelphia July 25 Inns with colonial roots shut under wartime law. The General Wayne Inn on the Montgomery Pike opened in 1704 as Wayside Inn, once headquarters for Mad Anthony Wayne and a long time polling place. Turk's Head Inn at West Chester also closed, visited by Washington, Lafayette, and Wayne era officers.
Rain drenched western Montana and northern Idaho helping forest officials ease a critical fire situation that had persisted for ten days. Heavy showers reduced fire danger and cleared much of the immediate threat to timber and communities in the region.

Eighteen year old Cameron O Day MacPherson, heir to a $350,000 estate with $15,000 yearly income, asked Surrogate Cahalan to grant him $250 a month from the estate. He is son of Mrs Grace O Day MacPherson, heiress of Daniel O Day, Standard Oil magnate. His father is Edwin Allan MacPherson of Buffalo. His mother died April 23 at the Hotel Majestic. He enlisted in 1918 in the Royal Air Service as a cadet and was stationed in Toronto until January when mustered out.
Washington July 25 President Wilson denied that he originated or formulated the Shantung provisions in the peace treaty with Germany. He said he exerted influence to modify them and accepted responsibility in dealings with Japan due to Britain and France reluctance to engage. Republicans Calder Cumming and Edge met him. others visited include McLean Newberry Page and Sterling. no discussion of the award with them.
President Wilson weighs peace negotiation documents while the press notes doubt over which Republican senators will be invited. He considers a weekend Mayflower cruise as ideal weather favors a voyage to Trampton Roads. Warren and a few other senators may be the only ones scheduled to meet in the near term.
Laredo Texas July 25 A dispatch reports former heavyweight champion Jack Johnson will be deported from Mexico for defiance of police authority refusal to obey Mexican authorities and scandalous conduct. The article adds Johnson will return to Spain.
Representative J Willard Ragsdale of South Carolina collapses and dies of heart disease in the office of Dr. R A Hope in Washington. A four term Democrat he served on the Foreign Affairs Committee.
July 25 report says a settlement of the Marine Workers strike is expected today. Vice Chairman Stevens of the Shipping Board, visiting since Monday, has conferred with seamen and operators and indicated that only signatures remain to seal the compromise.
PARIS July 25 The elections for a new French parliament will probably be held on October 12. During the coming recess the premier and Marshal Foch will draft a curtailment of military service.
