U S Department of Agriculture will sell nitrate of soda at $75.50 a ton to Halifax County farmers. Applications from actual farmers or landowners are due by February 4 and may be filed via County Agent N B Stevens or local committee members. The five day fuel saving order reduced casualties and disruption in Raleigh and surrounding areas. The state Capitol and executive departments closed, as did many stores and offices relying on coal for heat. Captain James H. Holgate of the field artillery National Army at Camp Jackson Columbia S C has been dismissed from service and sent to three years hard labor in the federal penitentiary at Atlanta for being absent without leave and for forging a note for two hundred fifty dollars.
Raleigh January 22 Weather cuts forced cancellation of the Hobgood institute set for January 23 with a promise to reschedule late February or early March The notice also cancels Williamston January 22 and Clifton January 24 and urges informants to notify attendees and arrange new dates.
London Jan 22 General Haig reports the repulse of an attempted enemy raid east of Ypres. No details are given and it is assumed no casualties or movements occurred on either side.
Washington January 22 American minister Reist protested to the Chinese government after the gunboat Monocacy was attacked on the Yanetse river fifty miles above Yochoa. The assault killed one sailor and badly injured two others, and is believed to be carried out by revolutionary forces. The U S government asks China to locate and punish those responsible.
Washington reports the War Department will recruit lumbermen and road builders aged eighteen to forty one for immediate service in France. Qualified men must obtain permission from Major C. E. Clarke of the Engineers Office, War Department, by mail or telegraph, and will be sent to France as soon as assembled without further military training.
In France Jan 22 Amele Sam describes a salvage base with wash tubs and darning machines. The Quartermaster plans for hundreds of thousands of soldiers to return from trenches with dirty clothes needing hot baths and clean garments as recreation awaits.

After a lengthy illness Mrs. Martha Bristow died at five this morning at nearly eighty six. She leaves two daughters and a son, the latter in Norfolk. Daughters include Miss Trene Bristow and Mrs. Johnson of Palmyra. Funeral at the residence tomorrow afternoon, interment in Baptist Cemetery, Rev. R. A. McFarland officiating.

Officials consider extending the five day order or issuing a new suspension with drastic curtailment of passenger service and tighter demurrage rules to speed coal unloading at tidewater terminals in New York Philadelphia Wilmington Detroit and Baltimore.
