A hitherto unpublished anecdote from 1871 tells how a young Thomas A. Edison applied at Maury Smith’s Broad Street telegraph office in New York to prove his speed. Deaf but keen, he copied a staged Washington message at 40 words a minute, winning a job on the spot amid a crowd of amazed operators. The tale comes from an item in March Delineator.

It promotes relief for a suffering child and urges customers to ask for the product. The page also notes Chamberlain's Pain Balm easing rheumatism with testimonials and mentions local druggists.
An advertisement proclaims Kodol Dyspepsia Cure will cure indigestion and rebuild the stomach. It claims thousands cured and ongoing daily results, urging readers to try it. Sold by E. T. Whitehead & Co.

A Miss Florence E Kenah of Ottawa Ontario recounts severe lung cold lasting months then relief within three weeks of taking Peruna. She praises its health restoration and warns winter weather fosters catarrh. A second testimonial from Miss Rose Gerbing of Crown Point Indiana credits Peruna with speedy cure after a bad cold. Four farmers neglect sheltering their field tools leading to rot and rust which costs as much as taxes. A sturdy shelter and strict habit of storing wagons, plows, barrows, and reapers under cover when not in use would save time spent searching for lost implements. A fragment from an 19th century advertisement promotes Green's August Flower and Electric Bitters as remedies for dyspepsia and indigestion. It touts a Lancaster New Hampshire user and his wife, claiming long term health benefits and affordability with trial bottles offered.
The Philadelphia Press notes a manager of a small show used a novel ploy printed on program backs: All women over forty will please keep their hats on. The audience, many with married sons as escorts, remained unhat tipped.
An advertising blurb touts One Minute Cough Cure as giving relief in one minute by killing the microbe that irritates mucous membranes and clearing phlegm. It condemns pneumonia risk, claims warding off illness, and promotes safety for all ages while praising pleasant taste. Also notes a theatre critic quip about a melodrama lacking a villain.
