State pen farm to shift to Atlanta goods contract
The state penitentiary will abandon most farm operations on Caledonia and 4500 acres, taking on a contract to manufacture risen goods for Standard Manufacturing Co of Atlanta. Convicts will make pants and overalls, with the state paid 62 cents daily per convict, and 0 to 300 convicts to work, including disabled workers. Work starts March first. A temperance group in Raleigh forms the Anti-Saloon League of North Carolina, with N B Broughton as president and a threefold plan: agitation legislation law enforcement.
