Metal furniture and fixtures for the new court house offices are expected to arrive about October 15 and will be installed within a week after that date. The items will feature the most modern and latest designs possible.
A humorous old tale recalls Will Rogers as The Hero of the Johnstown Flood. In heaven he tries to explain his fame to a bearded man who dismisses the flood, only to learn the man is Noah with the wings of an angel.
The Scandia P T A meets Tuesday evening October 17 at 8 p m. Mr Rogers will speak on Safety in the Schools and 7th and 8th grades will present an exercise on the topic. A musical selection by 8th and 4th grades Stop Look and Listen.
The Scandia Community Club met for a regular dinner at the Coffee Shop served by Mr and Mrs Johnson. Officers were elected with Cap Berger as president and E C Wires as secretary treasurer. Ed Olson declined to qualify and Max Muth was elected. Cap Berger then served as president with Harry Hampton vice president and Max Muth secretary treasurer. Committees were named for Football Trade Expansion Christmas decoration and Dr Ahrens reviewed the Conservation meeting.
Coonhound field trials will be held in Clyde on October 29 beginning at 9:00 a.m. For information contact W. S. Crammer, Secretary, Clyde, Kansas.
Walter Boyles arrived at Scandia State Bank to open for business and found the padlock key missing. He used a hacksaw to enter the bank. Alfort Johnson and wife moved from the Trailer House near A. M. Bettis home to the rear of the Coffee Shop. Sunday guests included Mr. and Mrs. Bill Clark and sons with the Strand and Robes families. Jessie Nichol and Esther Sjogren visited homes near Concordia over the weekend.
A October meeting at the high school auditorium featured Agriculture boys and Mr Clair with parents and speakers to discuss farm projects. Mr Hodges led greetings and later Mr Houton from the North Central Kansas Production Association spoke on credit and debt management. The program highlighted five course areas and project money earning potential. A football game between Glasco and Scandia drew about 500 spectators from multiple towns.
Betty Johnson opened the G R meeting Friday with Dark Eyes. Jean Johnson led devotionals from Romans 12 and the group carried out the topic Gracious In Manner as Courtesy. Miss Nichols spoke on Courtesy in home and school. Betty Larson sang Just As I Am. The closing hymn was Follow the Gleam followed by the Benediction.
The Hi Y group met in the high school auditorium Friday. Valjean Jackson and Lewis Smith led singing while Mr Helvey delivered an instructive talk on crime.
Scandia farmer Charles Othberg sustained a head wound and a broken collar bone after a fall on Saturday morning near the F and M Store. He was transported to Dr. C V Haggman for treatment.
Betty Johnson was a Friday overnight guest of Norma Bowersox.
A blue four door 1940 Oldsmobile is now on display at the Anderson Garage in town. Visitors can view the car and have the management explain its fine features to help decide its appeal.
The Y W C A and G R held their annual recognition meeting with a candle light service in the school auditorium. Minutes were read by Mrs. Joe N. Johnson and roll call answered by Y W C A members. A review covered the Beloit conference last spring and Miltonvale Neighborhood Meeting this fall. The group planned a Menninger Bible Course with Mrs. J C Everett. A social hour followed with cabinet members and Girl Reserves serving refreshments.
A local report notes Art Cardwell seen with a shovel allegedly filling a street hole near his business. No investigation yet to confirm completion, leaving open the possibility that someone else must finish the job.
Fred Downing and his wife formerly of Marion have sold their mercantile business there and opened a variety store in Glasco Kansas, in Cloud county, starting last Saturday. Glasco is praised as a good town and expectations are high for the new venture.
In an odd highway tale two men from Denver and a hitchhiker were abducted by a Utah man in a Denver car. They reached Beloit before the kidnapper fled in another car. The two victims sought shelter at the county jail. The suspect was later arrested in Kansas City for violating a traffic signal.
Mrs Ed Wires and Miss Mary West called on Mrs Della Colley at Munford hospital where she is convalescing from a broken hip. They also visited Mrs Claude Goodwin in the same hospital. Mrs Jessie Nichol reported the death of Mrs Ralph Nichol of Sterling and funeral services will be held Thursday at Highland Baptist church. Mr and Mrs Glenn Preble of St Joseph and Mrs George Harris and son of Kansas City visited relatives in Scandia.
The Swedes beat Glasco 13 to 7 on home turf in a hard fought opener. Captain Bowersox led a comeback as Elvin Ball scored twice and Jackson added the final point after a Cady pass. Glasco held a 7-6 halftime lead before the Swedes dominated late.
The American Royal Livestock and Horse Show begins October 14 in its 41st year with 500 classes judged by 40 judges. Over 10,000 4-H youth from across the country are expected to participate as top horses and livestock compete.
Tuesday this week marked the end of E P Plotners term as Republic County treasurer. Charles Ek Doupnik, elected last November, succeeded him. Parley remains undecided on his future path while recovering from a recent auto accident and will stay at home in Scandia. Mrs Eva Sothers and daughters visited Walter Gilmore in Belleville for supper.
