Wedded Without A Preacher In Pasadena California
California records report William F. Michener and Mary V. Miller, both of Los Angeles, married themselves in Pasadena under Quaker ceremony rules. No license, no clergy, no music, and no ring marked the simple union witnessed by relatives and church members. The event, claimed as California’s first self officiated Quaker marriage, followed 250 years of Fox founder tradition and California legalization in 1897.

Keepers at Hog Island Light on the Virginia coast faced a wild assault as thousands of geese and brant bombarded the tower. After an hour and a half of gunfire, sixty three birds lay dead at dawn. A second attack the next morning left the island without cartridges but the keepers chased away about 150 birds using sticks. The iron tower rises 180 feet and is visible twenty five miles from a steamer bridge.
