The case in Albion District Court ended after a violent clash on the streets involving Thompson of Boone County and Patterson allies. Mrs Patterson fired shots, injuring Thompson in the arm and leg while a drayman Florey was hit in the foot. Thompson is in custody and Mrs Patterson under arrest as tensions rise.
Coroner Kepner reports a drowned man found on the Blue River south of Shelby. The elderly, well dressed man carried 50 cents and letters to Riley Stratton of Spring Ranch, Clay County. He was registered at Stromsburg as “on his way to Council Bluffs” after washing on the riverbank and falling in. The coroner’s jury attributes death to drowning.
Lieutenant William S. Sinclair of the Twenty-eighth Infantry was acquitted after a trial for allegedly causing a soldier prisoner’s death by gagging and pouring water on his head. Reports describe two reconcentrado camps in Be tangas with 25,000 Filipinos, in good health, vaccinated, and living under strict sanitary control.
Superintendent J H Adams suspended twelve seniors for disobeying rules in a class color contest forbidden by the Ottawa public schools. The students wore red bunting taken from a rival class flag into the class 100m. Parents were invited to meet the superintendent and most likely the pupils will be readmitted.
A dispatch notes the Turkish government flatly refused the United States demand to repay 72 600 dollars paid to brigands for Miss Ellen Stone, with U S officials continuing efforts and diplomatic pressure.
The groom Thomas Goodwin aged 79 and bride Elizabeth Rodkey aged 63, both of Willis Kansas, were married at Hiawatha. It is the groom’s second marriage and the bride’s third. They had lived alone and chose to marry in their old age for companionship.
Mrs. Clarence Rosa of Cummings Kansas aged about 40 disappeared with Billy Cummings about 30 son of a longtime Atchison county family. The couple ran off last week with Mrs Russ writing from Colorado that she did not intend to return and urged a divorce. She praised her husband as too good and warned him not to trust a future wife.
In Madrid Bend Kentucky near Hickman on the Tennessee line two Black men were killed by white men and three beaten. Elijah Drake colored was said to have stolen chickens and was driven into the Mississippi river where he was shot dead. His body floated ashore and a rope was used to pull another man from deep water. Four more Negroes faced attack and Jim Stewart colored was shot and killed in the ensuing melee.
Two electric cars on the Kansas City Leavenworth line in Leavenworth were dynamited. One woman was injured. The first blast damaged a car beyond repair, tore off a wheel and ruined the motor, and split a 60 pound rail. A second blast on the Fifth avenue line damaged only windows. The company offers 250 dollars for information leading to arrests amid a weeks long strike.
Herbert Casebier, a young grocer from Arkansas City Kansas, has vanished from his home. Authorities see no immediate motive and expect to locate him within days. He previously worked as a conductor for the Illinois Central line based in Jackson Tennessee and is a member in good standing of the O R C which has been asked to help.
The jury in the Sam Smith liquor case from Arkansas City Kan failed to reach a verdict and was discharged nine to three for acquittal. A new trial will be held. Smith was arrested on a complaint by Mrs Myra McHenry editor of the Searchlight of Howard Kan who testified she bought half a pint of whisky from him.
John W. Honn of Shenandoah sues his brother Thomas G. Honn for 25000 damages alleging a conspiracy to ruin him financially and alienate the affection of his two wives. Both wives obtained divorces and live in Iowa.
Frank M. Hill, traffic manager of the Chicago Junction railways, has been missing for nearly a month. Telegrams broadcast nationwide have failed to locate him. Authorities fear he may be temporarily unbalanced after a salary reduction.
J R Campbell of Webster City Iowa a student at Iowa State Agricultural College shot fellow student J R Lawrence through the shoulder. The rifle bullet struck Lawrence in the breast then glanced off a pocket comb before passing through the shoulder.
Thomas Green, treasurer of the Fairmont Creamery, died after a fall in the old skating rink area while examining records. The accident crushed his breast bone and damaged his lungs and heart, leading to death within minutes. A Masonic funeral was held Sunday afternoon. Green had lived in Nebraska for about twenty two years and was a respected business associate and community member.
At a Lincoln gathering of populist and democratic state committees the main topic was when to hold the nominating conventions. Attendees agreed the convention date should be left to chairs after the Republicans announce theirs. Editors from across the state attended.
Chief Deputy Game Warden Simp kins stopped two men, Meyer Vine and H. Brown, with 300 fish near the Elkhorn depot. He suspects the catch was netted and filed a complaint for possessing more than the legal limit. Open season runs April 1 to October 31. limit is fifty fish with a $5 fine per fish.
Preliminary hearing for Thomas Garhan Henry Garhan Edward Doty Harry Ingalls and Fred Ingalls on charges of assault and robbery in Rising City March 8 ended with Judge Skiles dismissing the case. Testimony suggested a patent medicine show insulted by the doctor led to a street confrontation. no robbery was proven. Public opinion splits on the outcome.
P Coursey Richards was found guilty of criminal assault on his stepdaughter Marie Magdanz in Doncaster district court. The jury, after about four hours of deliberation, recommended mercy, signaling some jurors doubted the severity of the evidence. Judge Holmse may impose a penalty ranging from three to twenty years.
In Lead, eight mile district, Edward Stewart shoots Daisy Smith twice with a revolver during a quarrel at a dance hall. One bullet hit the left hand, the other pierced the arm and breast, passing through muscle and into the lung. Stewart is jailed in county lockup. The Republican State Central Committee fixed June 18 for the next state convention and selected Lincoln as the venue by a 20 to 5 vote. Delegates number 4,080, based on the fall Sedgwick vote. A large turnout discussed issues, with many candidates for congress from various districts and a generally harmonious committee session.
General Miles told the senate Committee on Military Affairs that if Senator Hawley’s bill to organize a general staff for the army becomes law he would resign his commission. He argued the measure was subversive to the military establishment and refused to participate further. The hearing, conducted behind closed doors, covered various army topics.
Five miles east of Noblé Oklahoma two unknown men rode to Pratik Hartman’s house at night and shot him dead Then they wounded his wife in the head and attacked his daughter with an ax before fleeing No motive is given and searchers were unable to locate the suspects.
A report states that two boys aged 15 and 17, members of a tramp party, were killed when struck by a train at Ysleta Texas as they slept on the track. A third boy, Freddie Winchester of Brunswick Georgia, escaped and supplied partial details including a companion named J. J. Johnson of Abilene Texas. the other boy’s name and home were not recalled, but he lived in Los Angeles.
The body of Oliver Wright, a Black man, was found near Higbee Missouri with back and arms scarred. Clothes torn and scattered along the road indicate a passing struggle. It’s believed he was whipped to death though the assailants and motive remain unknown.
Senator Hannah forwards the physicians bills for McKinley treatment to the Senate Finance Committee chairman and the House Appropriations Committee. The committees approve a $50,000 appropriation.
Thieves broke into the home of Rev. John Ferguson in Newton Iowa and chloroformed Mrs Ferguson, administering a large amount of the drug before leaving. No valuables were taken and authorities reported the victim’s life was at risk during the incident.
Reconstruction of a fatal river accident near Schuyler explains a liveryman’s alleged role pushing a buggy over a bridge. Rescuers searched Platte River for Mrs. Henry Ridmey and her niece as slush ice hindered boats. A local hunter, Spurlock, helped separate horses from the rig.
The Savannah jury acquitted Stewart Fife of the murder of Frank Richardson at the victim’s Christmas Eve home in 1900. One ballot was taken and the jurors were unanimous for acquittal from the start. Mrs Fife reacted with frantic joy as the verdict was announced, while Mrs Richardson, widow of the slain man, showed visible emotion in the courtroom.
A man from Balco, Missouri arrived in Auburn and claimed a horse connected to Goldsberry sales. James Tears was mentioned in the testimony about the stolen horse and its possession. During the trial, a Home headquarters member admitted involvement in the theft. A letter from White confirmed Tears had the horse in his possession.
Clyde Olmstead, 17, of Emerson Nebraska, was seriously hurt while riding freight trains with other boys. He stood on truss rods to pick up a stone, lost balance, and was dragged along a rod before being thrown at Sholta crossing. Neighbors rushed him to town. head injury feared with possible skull fracture behind the right ear.
Maj Gen Otis retires on the 25th and Maj Gen Arthur MacArthur will move to Chicago to lead the Department of the Lakes. Brig Gen Frederic Funston succeeds MacArthur in the Department of Colorado, and Brig Gen W A Kobbe is assigned to command the Department of Dakota.
