S A Leach of Tonganoxie warns that without new farm machinery the grain industry could shrink. He notes one worker now does as much as three years ago, wages are high but labor shortages persist, pushing farmers toward grass seeding, dairy cows, and milk sales.
John Turner of Paola died at home at 97 after a long life that spanned York England during Queen Victoria's reign to service at sea and in the British navy. He sailed as Lord Dundas’s body servant at 16 and served six years in the navy, witnessing the 1842 opium war in China before an honorable discharge. He moved to Kansas in 1874, married at 23, widowed for 60 years, and left seven children, four living.

Charles H. Lord of Dunbarton New Hampshire reports a massive pine tree on his farm aged by rings at about 200 years. The tree stood 134 feet tall with a 5 feet 4 inch stump diameter and four feet across at 60 feet high.
