Meeting on Fertilizer Practices At Scandia Grade School

About 75 farmers attended a Scandia Grade School event Monday evening, where George Perry of Albert Lea Minnesota spoke on fertilizer methods and soil testing. Johnson and Lerzom Grain and Feed sponsored. Joe Peters of Augusta Kansas demonstrated fertilizer slides. a chicken dinner preceded the program. Perry noted Minnesota snowfalls of 75 to 80 inches this winter.

Hedstrom Local Winner in Time Magazine Contest

Scandia High School reports Lee Hedstrom as the local winner in TIME's 31st Current Affairs Contest. Other top local students include Sonja Hammer Don Hammer Steve Vytlacil Donna Runft Marilyn Larson and Jack Mahan. The TIME Current Affairs Test covers national and foreign affairs plus categories such as business sports entertainment science religion literature and art.

KSU Chair In Novel Liturgy Inspires Scandia Visit

Nine Wesley Foundation members at Kansas State University performed a liturgical dance in two parts titled Prodigal Son and A Man Dies. Peggy Erickson, daughter of Scandia residents, partook. roughly 60 to 75 locally gathered to witness the unique service. The group plans a Europe tour this summer to fundraise with the evening offering.

U and I Art Club Meets with Bridge and Guests

The U and I Art Club gathered Tuesday February 28 at Mrs W Matthias home for a dessert luncheon and bridge. Members present included Mrs Cardwell Cooper Hammer Hammer Larson Ler vold Strom Tingstrom with guests Mrs Sederlin Waite and Norris. Next meeting set for March 14 with Mrs Strom and the Thompsons of Salem Oregon. a son born March 7. Grandparents listed include Mr and Mrs Charlie Robbins Concordia and others. Barton elected president of K N Angus Association

Dale Barton of Oberlin Kansas was elected president of the K N Angus Association at its annual meeting. Roger Peterson Holdredge Nebraska was named vice president and T L Sterner Franklin Nebraska was re elected secretary treasurer. Directors from Nebraska include Clayton Karr Bladen and DuWayne Kranau Ayr. Kansans on the board: Julian Deters Cawker City and Robert Korb Jr Burr Oak. Dale Cram Bladen Nebraska will represent the group with Kansas Angus Association. The meeting accompanied the 18th annual show and auction at Franklin Nebraska County Fairgrounds.

Weather shifts from snow to warmer temps this week

A quick cold snap moved in Tuesday with a strong north wind and afternoon snow. About a half inch fell, slick streets formed, and temperatures rise again Wednesday but stay well below last week’s 80 degree heat wave.

Scanda and rural fire departments responded to two grass and brush fires late Wednesday afternoon, one southwest of Scandia and the other to the north, aiming to prevent spread to nearby farm buildings.

A Methodist Concordia District youth rally gathered 150 youths at the Concordia Methodist church on Sunday afternoon for a program and lunch. Kelly Edges Scandia 713-71 For Third Place

The Scandia Flying Swedes finish fourth at Blue Valley regional after a 78-71 loss to Kelly. Erick Erickson led Kelly with 21 points. Duane Gile added 17. Scandia's Duane Gile top-scored with 21 for the Swedes, Richard Raney 19, and Jim Nylund 21 in the consolation win over Elwood before falling to Assaria 79-65 in the semifinals. Bryan Stenson and Richard Raney played their final game. Raney averaged 12 rebounds per game.
