Rocky at the Princess Promises Sheep-Killer Dog Drama

Deanna Durbin Stars in Something in the Wind at Princess Theatre

Deanna Durbin shifts from foreign lyric singing to American pop style in Universal International’s Something in the Wind. She duets with Jan Peerce on an aria from Verdi with English lyrics by Leo Robin, sings five original numbers by Johnny Green and Robin, and plays a disc jockey whose Turntable Song frames the story. Donald O’Connor co stars. the film is followed by a showing of Slave Girl on June 15-16.

Flaming Youth and the Roaring Twenties Bells

Postwar youth embraced rapid life and modern ideas after World War I. The term flaming youth described youths at the time as they danced the Charleston and enjoyed bootleg liquor, with girls as flappers and boys in raccoon coats. Clara Bow is noted as a landmark figure.

New Library Sign Marking Scandia Location

Adolph Nelson placed a sign designating the Scandia Library last week. The unmarked building is now clearly identified, earning praise from the library board Sorosis Study Club and Scandia residents for his thoughtful deed.

Floyd Johnson Dies in California Mine Cave-In

Floyd Johnson son of Mrs. Wilbur Zener was killed in a mine cave-in at ShoShone California early Wednesday. He leaves a sister Mrs. Thomas Brough of Kansas City and a brother Forrest Johnson of Tecopa. Body to be brought back for interment. funeral arrangements pending.

Scandia Honors War Dead Memorial Day Observance

Memorial Day observed in Scandia featured a high school program with Captain Earl A. Beeson delivering the address from Topeka. The American Legion Auxiliary president spoke, Girl Scouts performed a drill, and memorial services were held at Riverview Lutheran and Norway cemeteries with a parade and rifle volleys.

The Sherdahl Boosters 4-H girls met at Mrs. Myrtle Cardwell’s home on Friday afternoon May 28 for a vegetables preparation relishes and salads lesson. Eight members attended and were served refreshments by Mrs. Cardwell. The next meeting will be a sewing lesson at Jia Mae Allen’s home on Friday June 11.

Tebow to Direct Admissions at Kansas State College

Eric T Tebow will become director of admissions at Kansas State College on July 1 following approval by the State Board of Regents. Tebow, a Scandia high school graduate, is a well known local figure who has earned recognition in his field and the Journal joins the community in offering congratulations.

The annual McGuire Doctor reunion was held Sunday May 30 at the Rydal Presbyterian church parlor.
