1962 Standing Picnic Opens With Amusements And Parade

The 1962 Standing Picnic begins Thursday July 26 and runs through Saturday July 28 with daily 3 PM baseball games at the ball diamond. Amateur contest night Friday and Saturday at 7 PM features a Kiddie Pet Parade with ribbons and cash prizes for every entrant. Nightly dances at 9 PM charge 50 cents Thursday and Friday and 75 cents Saturday. Strong's Amusement Co presents rides and concessions.

Esther Circle Notes Roll Call and Meetings

Esther Circle met Thursday morning with 14 members at 9 30. Eva Stolander led devotions and a meditation from her reading. Arlene Swanson Roberta Champlin Nina Robison were to handle program booklets. Silent auctions continued and lunch followed served by C W Hrickson Sherman Robison.

H BUSINESSMEN PICNIC HELD AT BELLEVILLE ARMORY

The 4 H Businessmen's picnic drew several hundred attendees from across the county at the Belleville Armory on Monday evening July 23 Miss Bell Cameron the IFYE delegate from Northern Ireland presented slides. Attendees from Scandia included Dr C V Haggman and multiple Hageman Lervold Greenslade Aspegren Runst Cardwell and others with families.

Bake Sale Set By Youth Center On July 27

The Youth Center sponsors a bake sale at the Youth Center Friday July 27 after noon. Students are asked to bring at least a donation of baked goods and drinks, tea, and related items. Proceeds support Center activities.

Republic County Reports Six Month Bond Sales

A. H. James, Republic County Savings Bonds Chairman, says six month sales of Series E and H bonds total 230379 dollars, 46 percent of county quota and 90 percent of its Freedom Bond Drive goal. Statewide sales through June reach 36556807 dollars, 42.7 percent of the state quota.

Friendly Unit of Amana Lutheran Holds Friday Meeting

The Friendly Unit met Friday afternoon with Mrs J W Smith as hostess and Mrs Kenneth Tuley as co host. Nine members and two visitors attended. Members spent the afternoon mending for the Republic County Hospital. A lunch was served and the unit adjourned to meet in September.

4-H Home Ec Judging School in Belleville Attended

Sherdahl Boosters 4-H Club members attended the 4H Home Ec Judging School in Belleville on Saturday. Named participants include Marion Sothers, Joan Larson, Marilyn Larson, Low Ann Larson, Beth Lervold, Donna Runft, Carol Davis, Cynthia Thompson, Mrs Max Thompson and Mrs Don Runft.

Brownie Scouts Meet In City Office

The Brownie Scouts gathered at 3 p.m. Monday in the City Office with eight girls present. After the business meeting they walked to the Library grounds, collected sticks, and cleaned the Rosebed. Lunch was served by Rose Johnson. Jane Anne Aspgren will serve at next meeting.

Scandia Wins Mankato Area Junior Baseball Title

Scandia wins the district tournament after an eight game run. Caywood Crab Erkenbrack and Sjogren led pitching while Scandia totaled 66 hits in six games. They beat Mankato 4 1 to claim the championship and advance to the Russell District Tournament facing Salina.

Death of Eve Sandborn in Concordia Hospital

Eve Sandborn, longtime Clay Center resident and former dispatcher, dies at St Joseph hospital in Concordia after six days illness. She moved to Scandia last year to live with sister Mrs Raymond Cooper and is survived by three sisters, a brother, eight nieces and nephews. Telstar success spurs space age TV and comms tests

Telstar, the Bell System satellite, launched from Cape Canaveral with NASA cooperation to test relaying signals between the United States and Europe. 4-H Cooking Class Makes Pies at July 18 Meeting

Four-H cooking girls, 11 members and two guests Beth Marshall and Cathy Johnson attended a July 18 class. Demonstrations covered two pie crusts and proper table setting. The group then tasted and ate their pies including cherry, peach and rhubarb varieties.
