Scandia high school claims first place trophies for both varsity and junior teams at the Belleville gymnasium after decisive victories over Courtland and Cuba. All county players named include Leslie Cady Junior Ocobock and Ralph Larson amid district tournament plans and PTA program notes.
The Long Night screens at the Princess Theatre Saturday and Sunday February 28 29 featuring Henry Fonda Barbara Bel Geddes Vincent Price and Ann Dvorak. A tense romance set against a steel town backdrop the film follows a young couple amid a police siege and rival influence in a dramatic retro view.
The Princess Theatre presents a circus themed program with Chad Hanna starring Henry Fonda Dor othy Lamour and Linda Darnell in Technicolor. On March 9-10 the theatre adds Gas House Kids Go West and Law of the Lash in a second double feature show.
A film of Ed ward Small's adventure spectacle Kit Carson screens at the Princess Theatre in Kayenta Arizona with Dana Andrews Jon Hall Lynn Bari and Harold Huber in a story of the frontier explorer who helped map the overland route to California. Ern est Tubbs appears in The Hollywood Born D. A. Nywell visits Nantonville weekend guest of Dev and Mrs. E. Porter Abrems.
A pot luck supper was hosted Sunday evening at Mrs. Alice Hammer's home in honor of Irene Hammer's birthday anniversary. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Hammer and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Johnson and family, Mrs. Ellen Hammer, Lawrence Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hammer and son, Miss Phyllis Greenslade, and Max Remis and Tack Thull of Oakland City.
Relatives and friends traveled from distant cities to attend the funeral of Mrs. E. C. Wires. A family gathering honoring Johnny Nystrom’s birthday anniversary was held February 19 at Mr. and Mrs. John Nystrom’s home. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Harry Nelson and Donna of Jamestown, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Nystrom, Lois and Larry of Courtland, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Artie Jensen, Richard and Virginia.
Guests at the E. M. Eastvedt home during the past week included Mrs Karen Ross and Clarice, Mr and Mrs M L Larson, Mr and Mrs Dale Ainsworth, Mrs P P Hammer, Mrs Walter Darlington, Mr and Mrs F Therkelson, Mr and Mrs Lloyd Barleen, Janice and Jimmie, and Mr and Mrs John Carlson.

Wednesday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Johnson included Mrs. Alice Hammer and the Hugos family. Additional attendees were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hammer and Billy Hilton and Mr. and Mrs. Benny Lervold.
Vv. E. Dieckmann formerly of Scandia is named new section foreman on the Missouri Pacific section in Linn. He assumed duties on February 6 and will move his family to Linn after school closes this spring. Linn Palmer Recorder.

The Social Hour Club met with Mabel Johnson on February 19. Eight members attended. Roll call cited February born great men. Mabel Cline won the Guess What contest, Gladys Mikesell won Know Your Presidents. Lunch was served. Next meeting set for February 26 with Doris Kathrineberg.

News of a Fortunate engagement announced at a Kansas City buffet. Aileen Ainsworth daughter of Mr and Mrs Dale R Ainsworth will wed William Van Auken son of Mr and Mrs Howard Van Auken. The couple plan a June 19 ceremony in Kansas City at Second Presbyterian Church.
The Sorosis Study Club met on February 17 at Mrs. Wallace Aspegren's home and voted to cooperate with the Save the Children drive by UNESCO. Contributions for school children are due by March 2. Mrs. C. V. Hageman reviewed historical air flights and routes for world tours by air. On March 2 Mrs. George Cardwell will host at the club rooms.
The Ladies Auxiliary of Post 193 met at the club room on Wednesday evening February 18 with Mrs. Opal Rasmussen presiding. A round table discussion on rehabilitation generated ideas. Mrs. Edna Larsen was named chairman for the annual Poppy Drive. The next meeting is set for Wednesday evening March 3 with Mrs. Myrtle Sanderson and Mrs. Dale Sanderson as hosts. Sunday guests included Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Billups and Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Billups visiting Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schneberger.

Bertha Elise Wilson Wires died February 17 1948 in Scandia after a life spent in town. Born April 19 1884 she worked at local firms and sang in church choirs. Survived by husband Edwin two sons and two daughters predeceased by many relatives. Funeral February 22 1948 at the Methodist Church with East Star members later. Burial at Riverview Cemetery.
Nancy McClain daughter of Roy and Mrs McClain of Rossville married Walter C Preble Jr son of W C Preble Jr of Scandia in a single ring ceremony performed by Rev Lloyd Rising of Lincoln Nebraska. The bride wore a grey two piece dress and carried a white Bible with pink rose bud corsage. Attendants were Mrs Paul Albro and Paul Albro. The couple reside at 1604 Vine Lincoln Nebraska where Mr Preble works.
