Notice of Hearing on Thompson Trustee Case in Scandia

The State Corporation Commission of Kansas will hold a hearing at the City Office building in Scandia Republic County on Friday March 2 1956 at 10 oclock A M C S T concerning the application of Guy A Thompson Trustee Missouri Pacific Railroad Company Debtor and Railway Agency Inc to discontinue station agency and employment of any agent or representative at Scandia. All interested parties are notified to govern themselves accordingly.

At the Sherdahl HDU meeting held February 14 at Mrs. Leslie Rasmussen’s home seven members attended. They discussed foot care, a Crippled Children’s Clinic in spring, and advisory council plans for National Home Demonstration week April 30 to May 5 with a district meeting May 1 in Concordia. Scandia B Team Second in County Tourney Finals

Scandia's B team finished second at the county tournament in Republic, losing to Courtland by one point in a tight final. Fike hit a late long shot for Courtland, while Melhus led Scandia with 15 points and Ward added 12 as Scandia shot well from the line.

Fifth and Sixth Grade Classes Feature Poetry Study

Last week several students were absent due to illness including Virginia Corbin Peggy Erickson Peggy Freed and Charles Robbins. Ten students made 100 in spelling led by Deanna Cady Peggy Erickson and Janice Forsberg. The fifth grade studied patriotic poetry and some students shared original verses. The sixth grade English class is studying pronouns and prepositional phrases.

Eighth Grade Reading Tests and Spelling Honors

Cub Scouts Den 1 Troop 232 Meet at School

Den 1 Cub Scouts met Wednesday afternoon at the school building with seven boys and den mothers present. The meeting opened with a flag salute and roll call followed by a cub scout promise. Legion Auxiliary notes Americanism month and district plans

The American Legion Auxiliary promotes Americanism month to foster patriotism and citizenship. It distributed chairman materials due by March 1 and schedules a district meeting in Colby March 23–24, 1956. Plans to Fight Closure of MOP Depot in Scandia

Scandia community club members met to oppose the planned closure of the Missouri Pacific depot. A hearing set for March 2 was to assess impact on taxes and irrigation areas. Committees were formed to boost attendance and study railway freight effects and a potential joint station with Rock Island.

Albert Larson underwent surgery at St. Joseph hospital in Concordia. Monday morning reports indicate he is receiving care and is listed in stable condition as of this writing.

Amana Lutheran honors Elmer and family on 23rd wedding

The Amana Lutheran church celebrated the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Melby with a Sunday program. Guests heard songs and talks by Rev. Bly and Rev. Pearson, a paper on the couple’s life, and a reception in the basement with a three tier wedding cake baked by Mrs. Everet Johnson. The Melby children presented a gift as relatives filled the gathering.
