Western Light and Telephone Co seeks an average statewide electric rate reduction of about 1 percent for residential and 7 percent for commercial customers. The plan would cut annual revenue by 610,000 over nine months and reflect a tax-related saving of 212,000 from federal rate changes. If approved, new schedules take effect April 1.
The Kansas governor proclaims February 21 to 27, 1965 as American Heritage Public Schools Week. In Scandia the event features a Monday program at the grade school auditorium by Lebanon Lodge No 221 with the Scandia PTA, promoting public education and citizenry.
Mrs Russell DeWitt hosted the Triple L Club on Thursday afternoon February 11. After the business meeting pinochle was played at three tables. Members present included Mrs Hannah Freed Mrs Axel Jensen Mrs Merle Haser Mrs Reuben Johnson Mrs Bertha Christie Mrs Ben Lervold Mrs Wm Moe Mrs Bill Clark Mrs Lars Norgerd Mrs George Cardwell and Mrs Duaine Greenslade. Lunch was served and the adjourned meeting set for February 26 at Mrs Carl Erickson's home.
A 1965 honor roll lists Florence Nelson Formosa Major Edwin Sallman and others alongside a humorous poem about maintaining a wife’s appeal. It satirically outlines glamorous greetings, preferred meals, calm demeanor, and ending with a playful suggestion to stay in bed until the husband leaves for work. The piece cites names and towns among the readable fragments.
Memorial gifts to the library include Gift From The Sea by Ann Morrow Lindbergh and No Two Ways About It by Dale Evans Rogers in memory of Mrs. Zenia Stofer and Mrs. Dale Sanderson. Scandia Library received numerous novels from Erwin Lewis and Walter H. Berger including Rex Stout works and Erle Stanley Gardner titles. Glenwood Freed spent Sunday visiting the Kirk family of McCook Nebraska and returned home after a two week stay.
The Scandia School published a February meal plan listing daily menus from February 18 to 26 featuring goulash salmon loaf and other items with milk and dessert. It also reports basketball results, spelling and mastery scores, Valentine events, room mothers, and grade news across 1st to 7th grades with illness absences noted.
Mr and Mrs Walter Henry celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at 2048 7th Street LaVerne California on Sunday January 31 1965 About 90 relatives and friends attended from 2 to 5 PM The couple wed February 3 1915 in Scandia Rev A A Nordin officiated Attendants were Florence and Ivar Nordin The Henrys have resided in California for 12 years Also present were Mrs Eva Nichol and Glen Nichol Mrs Neal McBride visited relatives in Omaha Nebraska and Mr and Mrs Darwin Housholder hosted a Saturday dinner at the Goodin home in Belleville
Public schools week program at Scandia Scandia Grade School auditorium on Monday February 22 1965 features PTA call to order invocation pledge audience welcome musical numbers from Scandia High School and Sederlin guest recognition progress report by Schools Supt Harry C. Quantic and principal Don Wilson words of appreciation and PTA business meeting followed by refreshments hosted by Lebanon Lodge No. 221.
The Blue and Gold Banquet for Cub Scouts will be at the grade school auditorium on February 20 at 6 00 p m with a potluck supper. Each family is asked to bring their own table service.
The Scandia Alumni Association named committees at its Feb 14 meeting with Darwin Housholder presiding. Plans set for the May 21 gathering at 6 30 pm at Rural High School. A dance will follow at the grade school gym with numerous chairmen and members listed for program nominating menu dance decorating table and clean up roles.
The Annual Kansas Bostwick Irrigation District Water Users Meeting will be held Monday February 22 1965 at Courtland High School. The program runs 9 30 a m to 1 30 p m with reports by district directors along with talks on fertilizer weed control pesticides corn borer rootworm control alfalfa dehydration and livestock futures featuring experts from Spencer Chemical Co Kansas State University and the St Joseph Livestock Foundation. A noon meal coffee and doughnuts are provided and door prizes will be awarded during intermissions. attendance is urged by all area growers.
Miss Hileen Thompson and Pic Eugene F. Lervold wed in a Belleville First Methodist ceremony. The groom’s brother Dale Lervold served as best man, with a reception in the Fellowship Hall and a short honeymoon before the couple settles at Fort Riley. Out-of-town guests travel from Scandia Norway Concordia Clyde Munden Hays Denver Wichita and Colby.
The Lions Club of Scandia gathered with 26 members and one guest on Tuesday evening February 9 at the American Legion Wall. A supper was served by the Legion Auxiliary, and Bob Raney showed pictures on agriculture. The next meeting is scheduled for February 23 at 7:00 PM. Mrs. Edith Norris attended the Sunday dinner hosted by Mrs. Jim Davis.
