A large Chinese hibiscus tree with red double blossoms sits in Dr. J. L. Bennett’s office. The plant, planted by Mrs. Mary Bennett decades ago, has buds on every twig and flowers that last about a day, recently moved from a bank in Asherville to a basement before being rescued to Scandia.
Guy Ole Frazier arrives back in Wichita after a two week trip to Southern California and Old Mexico. He says he hunted fished and enjoyed the vacation and that he also visited his brother.
At Scandia Farm Supply the Open House drew 391 registrations for prizes. Coffee and lunch were served as Mrs Irvin Nondorf won a fire extinguisher by guessing 831 bolts in a jar. others won tools, a toaster, a badminton set, swim fins, and a storm door. Sponsors included Wyatt Manufacturing Co Lee Hardware Central Kansas Electric Brown Welding, Hardman Lumber, Scandia Farm Supply.
Dismissals and hospital stays include Jill Thomas and Edwin Isaacson at St. Joseph and Cheyenne Lodge, with Maurine Larson returning home from Republic County hospital. Mark Stolander had a tonsillectomy at Republic County hospital. Harley Shaffer is ill at St. Joseph Hospital. Rummage Sale planned by American Legion Auxiliary in early March. donations welcome via Minnie Cardwell Ruby Smith or Pauline Brown. Social notices include multiple visits and gatherings among local families and residents of Republic, Downs, Concordia and nearby areas.
The upcoming ten days feature two regular high school games and four tournaments. Notre Dame visits Friday for the last league game, while Scandia and Norway teams schedule multiple games including Saturday clashes with Mahaska and Munden. Final rounds run February 20 to 22 with freshmen action beginning Monday on the North Central court at Morrowville.
Scout events mark Boy Scout Week with uniforms worn to church next Sunday. Cub Scouts led by Dr Bill Moe decorate a window near Cardwell IGA while Boy Scouts present a life size figure in the Journal office window. A Blue and Gold Dinner for eight Webelos and others will honor awards. The movement began in England in 1907 and Cub Scouts started in 1930. programs stress mental moral and physical development and civic service.
Field Representative Jack Loftus of the Social Security Administration will visit Belleville Kansas on Tuesday February 18 1969. For information call the Courthouse Basement between 10:00 and 2:00. The article explains changes in disability credit rules and urges timely claims to avoid loss of benefits for those disabled before February 1968.
Notice warns that any dog picked up after March 1 1969 without a rabies tag on its collar will be disposed of by the City. Community Club members debated a one day versus two day Scandia picnic this summer at the City Office. Proposals favored a two day event with Saturday games and Sunday church services plus a focus on Swedish heritage and biannual scheduling with Lindsborg’s Fest.
The Flying Swedes defeated Jamestown 91 67 Tuesday night on the Jayhawk court. Gordon Berry scored 40 points tying his season high while Ed Carlgren and Gary Johnson excelled in rebounding and defense. Twelve Swedes played as the team delivered one of its best performances of the year.
Saturday overnight and Sunday guests visited in Manhattan and at the Larson home. Marilyn Larson, a Bethany College sophomore, will begin her second semester there. Other guests included the Moe and Anderson families, Sjolander clan, and the Sjolander family in Concordia. A visit to Pearl Johnson at Belle View Manor occurred Tuesday afternoon.
Scandia High School’s Flying Swedes captured the Pike Trail League Tournament crown by beating Cawker City 74 59 in Jewell. The victory followed semifinal and prior round wins over Jamestown 71 50 and Glen Elder 64 61 in overtime, with key late scoring by Gordon Berry and Doug Rominger boosting the Bearcats’ earlier momentum.
Weather notes colder air arriving late Tuesday and Wednesday ends a mild stretch. Highs in the upper 40s over the past week contrasted with winter conditions. A light snow Saturday left less than an inch on the ground, now melted except for ice in gutters and shady spots.
Courtland Art Guild hosts an Easter themed art display March 21 to 23 with one entry per artist. Judges are Mrs Harriet Becker and Mrs Frantiska Palacek. prizes 10 5 and 3 dollars, 50 cent entry fee. entries due February 22. delivery and pickup details and location provided.
Dick Larson enlisted in the U S Navy and left here on February 8th. He is stationed at San Diego for training with the Recruit Training Command at the U S Naval Training Center San Diego California. His address is SR Richard A Larson USN B657114 Company 118. Mr and Mrs Lee Loring and David were guests Friday evening of Mr and Mrs Richard Loring.

Scandia High School Alumni Association members will meet Wednesday February 19 in the Royal Cafe dining room to plan the annual banquet. Coffee and doughnuts will be served. All members are urged to attend.
In Scandia City the Citizens ticket lists mayor Wm Moe and councilmen Carl Erickson Floyd Johnson. The People’s ticket lists mayor Dick Senner and councilmen Russell DeWitt Paul Reed. USD 426 school board candidates are Richard L Larson Loren Carlgren and Victor C Hurtig Jr. Carlgren and Larson are farmers while Hurtig is a veterinarian.
The glass backboard fund surpassed $400 and sits at $404.50 after recent donations. Donors include Reynold Nystrom Glenn Scrivner Ralph W. Larson Carl E. Larson Warren L. Johnson Peter L. Hugos and Harold Melhus. Fred L. Dutton died February 7 1969 at 86. Funeral was in Our Saviors Lutheran Church Norway.
