Red Cross Scandia Unit Completes 1938 Roll Call Drive

The Scandia American Red Cross unit finished its annual membership drive raising 82 dollars 88 cents. Donors include Dr E Pp Ahrens C E Beach Home Oil Co Scandia Telephone Co and many local residents and businesses. Chairwoman C V Haggman oversaw canvassing with help from Miss Mary West Mrs Jessie Ward and Miss Jessie Nichol.

Scandia U B Church Set to Reopen Sunday

The Scandia United Brethren Church will hold a reopening and homecoming next Sunday December 5 following six years of closure. An all day program is planned and detailed on page two of this issue. The church has been repaired and redecorated through the past month.

Church Notes and Announcements

The Sunday School convenes at 10 for all ages with morning worship at 11 and Holy Communion. The choir provides music at the Lord's Table. A Communion Meditation titled The Disciples Buried Jesus is read. No evening service due to joint services with United Brethren Church. Thursday at 7:30 p.m. the Young People’s Bible Class holds a social in the church parlor.

Our Savior's Lutheran Sunday Schedule and Appeal

Norway T. O. Torgeson, pastor, announces Bible class at 10 and morning worship at 11 this Sunday with a fourth quarterly offering goal. If 25 families give 5.30 each the budget apportionment will be met. Ladies Aid meets Thursday with Mrs Lars Hammer and Mrs Lloyd Hammer serving. A note of thanks goes to those who supported the League Rally and hopes for continued blessings.

The Little Friendly Church Service Schedule

Thanks to 230 diners and contributors for the church dinner. The article lists meetings for choir, west and town groups, brotherhood and mission sessions, and Sunday programs led by Pastor Linerson and visiting pastors. Merchants Will Have Dog Show in Scandia

Scandia merchants plan a dog show and parade on Saturday afternoon December 11. Eight prizes of 1.50 will be awarded. entrants receive a Princess Theatre ticket and become eligible for prizes. The event is expected to draw many entrants and is described in this issue. Next week will announce additional holiday contests.

Annual Swedish Supper at Methodist Church December 9

A Swedish supper will be served at the Methodist church on Friday December 9 starting at five o clock. Menu includes lut fish Swedish potato bologna summer sausage pickled herring potatoes Swedish brown beans rye bread butter cheese Ost kaka Lingon berries red apples dessert pickles cookies Sprits and coffee. There will be stands selling homemade candy fancy work and other foods and a fish pond for children.

Beer Truck Flips on Detour Near Scandia

A Concordia beer truck overturned Saturday night on the detour west of Scandia while approaching a new road. The driver steering too sharply tipped the truck into a ditch between the detour and the new road and it was righted on Sunday morning.

Former Judge E M Crane Dies at 73 in Kansas City

E M Crane, 73, former probate judge of Republic County from 1917 to 1919 and longtime Belleville grocer, died suddenly on Thanksgiving Day in Kansas City of heart disease. He leaves wife, daughter Lucille of Kansas City, and son Max of California.

Scandia Hi-Y Delegates To Attend State Meeting

Three Scandia Hi-Y Club members and teacher Herbert Shde will drive to Beloit Friday for the State Hi-Y Conference. Delegates Bill Goodwin George Thompson and Ralph Hawkins will stay for the event and return Sunday afternoon.

Funeral services for George L. Larson held

George L. Larson aged 65 died Tuesday evening at his son George Larson Jr residence south of Scandia after months of ill health. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Hampton Danielson Funeral Home and Scandia Lutheran Church with interment in Riverview Cemetery.

Everett Doctor Watson of Scandia has drawn praise from major papers for his football skill. The Kansas Wesleyan senior, 197 pounds, plays end and has been named on several all selection lists while starring for the Swedes in Salina.

Annual Masonic Meeting With Election Next Monday

The local Masonic Lodge will hold its annual meeting with officer elections next Monday evening. An oyster supper will be served at six o'clock to all in attendance, after which the election of officers for the coming year will follow.

Congress resumes its second week with Senate farm bill and House agricultural program under debate. Conference committees termed the Third House aim to craft a unified bill for both chambers. Mrs Alford Johnson Blameless After 1928 Sedan Wreck

Mrs Alford Johnson wrecked a 1928 Chevrolet sedan on a county road south of Courtland. The car left the road after catching in ruts and turned over. She escaped with no injuries after breaking the windshield to exit.

Bank assets go under the hammer at liquidation sale

Assistant Receiver Adolph Nelson plans to finish liquidating the failed Bank of Scandia this month. Stewart Bailey of Wichita bid the eight remaining items and purchased all paper and real estate, with bids on loans, notes, stock liability, and an 80 acre Missouri farm selling for small sums. Final settlement awaits approval by the Bank Commissioner and Republic County District Court. papers in safety deposit boxes remain accessible.

Nan A Johnson Dies at 73 After Illness

Nan A Johnson, 73, mother of Alford Johnson of Scandia Mentor Marty and George Johnson of Courtland, died at her daughter’s home Saturday after a long illness. Funeral service was held at the Christian church in Courtland and interment followed in Courtland Cemetery.

Governor to speak at Republic County school meeting

Governor Walter A. Haxman is set to address a joint gathering of the Republic County Teachers' Association and School Board Association in the high school auditorium on Saturday afternoon December 5. Ray D. Hodgell, Assistant State Superintendent of Public Instruction, will also speak in the afternoon.
