Plans Made for Allotting Wheat in County

Planning meetings August 24 and 25 to distribute wheat allotment blanks and contracts to growers in Courtland Beaver Norway and Scandia townships. Local committees were elected and a county advisory council formed from township chairmen. Agricultural Adjustment Administration guidelines outline practices for unused contracted acres including ground left unplanted summer fallowing and permanent pasture seeding.

Larson Buys West End Filling Station and Cabins

John D. Larson purchased the West End Filling Station and cabins from Ben Goldbronson. Possession is planned around September 1. The Skelly gas and oils line will continue, with a full auto accessory line. A cement slab will be added and a new coat of paint applied to station and cabins.

Mrs. Fred Ward Dies After Illness at Sister’s Home

Mrs. Fred Ward dies Sunday evening at her sister Mrs Willie Keil's home south of Concordia after months of ill health. Survived by husband Milton and sons Loyaldean Regis Sigsbee. Funeral services held at Bethel Church south of Concordia in the afternoon with burial following.

Inspectors Boost State Vehicle Dept Performance in July

In July the state motor vehicle department reports improved efficiency and prompt service due to inspector efforts. The initiative emphasizes timely duty execution and better overall results for applicants and stakeholders.

Belleville Free Fair closing Thursday for regional events

The mayor orders stores to close at 12 noon today so the North Central Kansas Free Fair in Belleville is accessible to all. Citizens are urged to attend the fair as Scandia and Courtland games and the Old Settlers Picnic at White Rock are scheduled nearby.

Cuba Concert Band Performs Friday on Main Street

Friday evening September 8 the Cuba Concert Band directed by Dr E V Kalin will give a band concert on Main Street. A full program will appear in the Journal next issue. Featured numbers include Semper Fidelis Shuffle Off to Buffalo Cikanka and Bohemian Rhapsody

Sacrament of Lord's Supper at United Brethren Presbyterian church

On Sunday at eleven o clock the sacrament of the Lord's Supper will be administered by Rev W S Smalley pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Belleville. Members and friends are urged to attend. The Young People's Classes thank friends for help with the ice cream social last Saturday night and kindly note thanks to Hageman and Wires for using their building. At school opening, renewal of regular church and Sunday School attendance is invited.

Adam Lutheran Church Service Schedule and Events

Adam Lutheran Church in Kackley lists Twelfth Sunday after Trinity services with Sunday School and Bible classes at 10, Morning Worship at 11, and evening services. Journal Editor Signs Presidents Agreement on NRA Membership

J P Storer Jr signs the Presidents Agreement for Scandia Journal and receives the NRA insignia from the postmaster. Joining the NRA implies shorter hours and higher wages, to be pursued without notable rises in subscription, advertising, or job work rates.

Narka farmer kills wife then dies by suicide

C J Boddy, 44, a prominent Narka farmer, shot his wife in their home and then killed himself on the front porch. A note cited an incurable illness in Mrs Boddy and financial troubles as motives. Their children slept upstairs as the tragedy occurred. Boddy had been a minister and later a livestock feeder and school board clerk. The Boddy family had ties to Denver and Narka.

Scandia High School to Offer Free Instrument Lessons

Scandia schools will provide music instruction for high school students who supply their own instruments and complete required practice. Private lessons on strings reeds and wind instruments are offered at no cost. Beginning in September, students can join the school orchestra within weeks under instructor Miss LaVerne Johnson. Enrollment arrangements are made at enrollment or in the first week of school.

York College Students Conduct Services Sunday

York College Nebraska students William Hice John Boren Frank Green and Vicente Colon conducted the Sunday morning service at the Presbyterian United Brethren Church. The service featured a concert of sacred music and an excellent talk by Mr Hice.

Crowd Packed Ball Park For Comic Game

Last Friday evening the ball park was surrounded by a crowd eager to see the comic game. A Crider runner up drew attention as spectators crowded the field and paid admission to watch the event unfold.

Masonic Picnic at Pawnee Park Set for Labor Day

Masons across the county plan a first time social outing at Pawnee Park on September 4. A basket dinner at one o'clock will be followed by games kitten ball and bridge with free refreshments for children. Lodges from Belleville Scandia Munden and nearby towns announce the event led by district officers and will urge member attendance.

North Central Kansas Free Fair Opens in Belleville

The North Central Kansas Free Fair began in Belleville on Monday and runs five days. Organized in 1878, it has grown into one of the region’s largest fairs with horse and automobile races. Ninety two horses entered the running events held Monday through Wednesday and car races are on schedule today and Friday on the half mile dirt track treated with calcium chloride. Displays of farm produce and educational exhibits fill the halls.

Sunday closings approved for all Scandia grocers including Colemans F M Store Hammers and City Market after NRA signings. Local grocerymen from Jewell and Republic counties met led by Ric Courtland to discuss plans but no definite schedule set yet.

School Reopens After Summer Break With New Faculty

The district prepares for the start of classes next Monday with new superintendent Miller, first grade teacher Rey Tedrow, and music instructor Miss La Verne Johnson. Enrollment ends Monday, regular sessions begin Tuesday as the renovated building awaits students.

Game Warden Visits Scandia to Introduce District Changes

James C. Carlson, Salina district game warden, visited Scandia last Thursday on a get acquainted tour. He returns from a wardens meeting led by state warden G. W. Strong and outlines a redrawn district with eleven wardens and ten counties. Carlson may relocate to Concordia and plans to appoint two deputy wardens for Republic County.

Selins Attend Chicago Conference and World’s Fair

Rev. and Mrs. B. W. Selin and Carl Selin left Sunday for Chicago. The Rev. Selin will attend the Methodist Conference there this week and the party will visit the World’s Fair, relatives, and friends before returning home in about two weeks.
