Reports show new subscriptions during the past week including Albert Moe M G Loofbourrow of Concordia. Details indicate ongoing subscription activity for general readers.
Since no show occurred on Wednesday night August 24, all tickets sold by the Girl Scouts will be valid for the August 31 performance. The girls will resume sales for the August 31 event.
MGM's The Student Prince arrives in color with Ann Blyth Edmund Purdom and Louis Calhern in the Heidelberg romance musical based on Sigmund Romberg. Mario Lanza supplies singing voice as the prince studies and falls for a commoner with Edmund Gwenn and Cuddles Sakall in the supporting cast. Also playing September 3-4 is Three Coins in a Fountain with Clifton Webb.
The third Heart of America Accordian Festival took place August 18 and 14 in Topeka. Five girls from Belleville's United Teachers Accordia Studio performed solos and quartet numbers. The event drew 750 soloists 48 groups and 2200 guests from seven states. The World's Greatest Trio Bill Hughes Len Monno and Bill Palmer performed. The Queen's Ball followed.
Scandia will begin classes on a half day schedule September 5 with a full faculty returning. Harry Quantic serves as superintendent and science, Grace Robison teaches English and History, May Robison Commerce, W H Moore Vocational Agriculture, Lucille Van Gundy Home Economics and Math, Harold Pounds coach and science, Mildred Pounds vocal music, and John Van Gundy instrumental music and Boys Glee Club. Grade teachers return from last year. principal Helen Beck with 7th and 8th grades, Edna Richardson 5 and 6, Florence Clark 3 and 4, Edna Robison 1-2.
The American Legion Auxiliary met August 2 at the Legion Hall with officer elections. Installation occurred August 17. Officers for the coming year include President Mrs J D Greenslade Vice-President Mrs Allen Gunter 2nd Vice-President Mrs Sanderson Treasurer Mrs Wayne Smith Historian Mrs Homer Card Sergeant at Arms Mrs Leslie Rasa.
Mir and Mrs Lloyd Burge and children of Washington and Mr and Mrs Warren Wellin and family of Court along with Mr and Mrs Junior Cady and family are noted in a short social item describing visiting relatives and household connections.
Lancaster and Mayo star in Warner Bros South Sea Woman a tropical island comedy adventure. Burt Lancaster plays a duty minded Marine amid romance and action while Virginia Mayo shows off provocative costumes and island robe scenes. Also mentions Brigadoon trailer for September 7.
In Concordia on August 16 the Scandia Cookies fell 7 to 5 to Concordia Rotary. Raymond Lewellyn pitched well for Scandia with 11 strikeouts. Bourne and Gallager pitched for Concordia. Scandia made four seventh inning errors and totaled seven hits while 13 players fanned.
Scandia defeated Courtland 20 to 11 last week to stay unbeaten this season. Barbara Everhart and Lois Quantic pitched, Peggy Erickson caught. They host Courtland again tomorrow night, in a rematch titled Guess Who? Courtland.
The town team defeated Courtland 20 to 12 last Thursday as Larry Smith earned the win before Harold Pounds finished the sixth. Norway then beat Whiz Kids 18 to 7 with Harold Pounds starting and Arlis White entering in the sixth. Monday night in a rematch the Swedes fell 16 to 10 as Arlis White started and Pounds finished after the fifth. Pret Jensen started for Norway before Bud Jensen came on early. No firm schedule yet but another game is likely soon.
The annual Freshman Night returns on Friday September 9 with the reissued film The Milkman starring Donald O Connor and Jimmy Durante and a cartoon carnival of eight MGM cartoons. Freshmen from Scandia Courtland and Republic are invited to attend this traditional event.
Mrs Hugh Modlin entertained the NOYE club at her home Thursday afternoon with social visiting a Tears Ane ce luncheon served by the hostess The group adjourned after saving Mrs Loren Fiorell on September 15.
Edwin C Wires, Rev 1890 1965, died at St Josephs Hospital in Concordia after minor surgery complications. Born near Norton Kansas he moved to Scandia in 1912 and built Haggman and Wires Drug Store later Rexall. He served as mayor and was deeply active in Masonic orders, banking, theatre and community plays. Survived by widow Lois and sister Grace Daly Alaska. services in Scandia.
Mrs Irving Isaacson hosted a Monday afternoon birthday gathering for Bobbie with guests Jane Hay Phyllis Hammer Sonia Olsen Hans Olsen Jim Erickson Roger Larson Jeanette Isaacson Jimmy Isaacson and Mrs Olive Isaacson present.
Mrs Neal Cady was a Monday evening guest of Mrs Agnes Cardwell and Miss Laura Rasmussen.
Mr and Mrs Warren Nelson of Superior Nebraska with Mr and Mrs Chris Nelson and Mrs Myrtle Grubb and Mrs Agnes Brooks of Kansas City left Sunday for a vacation in Denver Colorado and other points of interest in Colorado.
Mr and Mrs Hyner Larson were Friday evening supper guests of Mr and Mrs Don Larson and family. Mr and Mrs Harold Larson and Jerry of Smith Center were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Ted Larson and Allen.
Mr and Mrs Charley Stolander spent Sunday evening with Mr and Mrs Vernon Evert and Pamela in a social gathering reported by the local society column.
Mrs Axel Jensen. hospitalized at Belleville Hospital is reported improved at this writing.
Mr and Mrs Alvin Stolander of Kangas City spent the weekend with relatives here. John Petera returned to Kansas City with them.
Mr and Mrs Arnold Perry and family left Thursday for a week long vacation visiting relatives and friends in Wisconsin and Minnesota during which they will travel and enjoy time together.

A Tuesday evening picnic supper and family gathering at the Granstedt cabin honored Mr. and Mrs. Martin Lervold of Tacoma Washington. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Warren Johnson and baby, Mrs. Lena Lloyd and Franklin, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Zener, Thomval Anderson and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Moe.

Beginning Saturday September 3 the Princess Theater will move the showtime to 7 30 pm. Patrons are urged to arrive a half hour early to secure seating and enjoy pre show activities.
The North Central Kansas Free Fair in Belleville runs six days from Sunday August 28 through Friday September 2. Livestock poultry and other divisions are filling fast as crews finish barns and halls. Highlights include six days of varied racing on a fast dirt track with AMA sanctioned motorcycle races and an IMCA stock car meet featuring Bobby Grim and Jimmy Campbell. The Roller Cades of 1955 and the Tommy and Larry Holden Daredevil Revue headline nightly acts with Kids Day on Monday offering nine cent rides. Reserved seats available for racing and Daredevil shows.

The Sherdahl Boosters 4H club held its final meeting on August 15 at Frank Kelly's home. All ten members, four fathers and one leader attended as Larry Kelley led discussions on books and records. The group reviewed quiz results and covered the B unit topics including Ignition systems and Winter Care. County schools were held at local implement dealers in Belleville and Courtland. Myron Kellogg is Countywide Treasurer and Homer Cardwell is local leader.
Mr and Mrs John Sjolander hosted a Sunday gathering with guests including Mr and Mrs Bill Wilson, John Peters Marion, and nets Sjolander of Lisbon Net Miss Ann Peterson and Mr and Mrs Charley Sjolander and family attended.
