Home and vicinity notices include visits from Mrs. Frank Berggren from Republic and Mrs. A J White from Colorado Springs. Earl Ramsey visits from Topeka while John Fraser plans a Denver stay. Erickson Bros. debut a new traction engine and a large Concordia College catalog is in progress.
A local reader notes the lone telephone company cable and suggests accompanying electric light wires and water hydrants. Belleville races disappointed a Scandia crowd despite fast track times. Train No 9 brought four passengers to Scandia who could not stop at Belleville and returned by team.
Mrs. D. N. Woods is very ill. Mary Poage stays with sister Mrs. Chas Nondorf near Talmo. Ju S. Garman and George Sigsbee ill this week. Mrs. Elmer Sothers and children visit Thos. Dowling in Scandia. Robt. Nylund and baby and Mrs. J. Hulcomb with Glenn of Arkansas visit Garman’s. Parmley Moyers, visiting Sothers, returns to Weatherford Texas.

Julius Olsen and family back from Superior. Penal Larsen to Kansas City with stock. Mrs Stocker from Concordia visiting Mrs Theo Granstedt. W B Gulick leaves for Chicago and eastern trips. Wim Woodard of Junction City in town. Frank Larson buys new automobile the first in Scandia. W Gifford takes a month off as Missouri Pacific foreman. Mary Simball returns to Manhattan for Minneapolis excursion. Mel Xinzie changes paper from Almena to Noreatur Kansas and buys a barber shop. Mr and Mrs Walter Preble travel to Republic. Mrs Preble visits parents. J A Brownell family and others attend Mrs Brownell’s funeral in Yuma.
Miss Amanda Olson recently returned from Ottawa county and subscribed for the Journal for A Nest Erberg at Wells Kansas. J L Kinney brought his wife from Republic to visit home folks in Iowa. Mr Kinney will travel to Colorado to look for a location.
Frank Berggren purchases the Rosenquist house occupied by E. W. Belfield for 2000 dollars. Mr and Mrs Berggren will move to town to provide their children with access to the town schools.
Capt. W Ae Walker died at his home Tuesday morning after a sudden sinking spell. Born March 26 1883 in Ladleville New York he joined the California gold rush of 1849 and endured hardships with a partner before reaching California. He later spent years in mining and the mercantile business in California.

The obituary honors Mr. Walker, longtime Scandia resident, postmaster, mayor, grain businessman, and Civil War veteran. Born in Illinois, he served in the 23rd Veteran Reserve Corps, 56th Illinois Vol. Inf, and 127th Illinois Vol. Inf, earning commissions and wounds in Florida and in battle against Confederates. He helped build the city and coal line, promoted public works, and was noted for honesty, kindness, religious study, and steadfast friendships despite political opposition.
