Burning reduces yield in pasture and hay land
The October 1948 Soil Conservation report by the U S Department of Agriculture notes that burning pasture lowers hay yield. In one test area protected from grazing and fire, hay per acre reached 2 886 versus 1 366 for land protected from grazing but burned annually. A second area fire free for 11 years yielded 3 907 per acre, while a neighboring plot burned twice yielded 1 858. The burned wooded area lost 12 and 31 times more soil and water respectively than adjacent unburned areas.
