William Brooks colored man killed Chief of Police Lilly in a confrontation at a city home. A mob of 400 angry citizens captured Brooks in Elkins West Virginia and hanged him in the town park after the deadly exchange. The slain chief died from a gunshot wound and Brooks was carried away from the scene to be strung up.
The Epworth Assembly returns to Lincoln park from August 7 to 15 with a packed program. Notable speakers and entertainers include Slayton jubilee singers Nebraska Wesleyan quartet Mrs Chant Eli Perkins Sam Jones Col Bain Stoddard Bishop Joyce Thoburn and Robert Meln tire. An assembly chorus of 200 voices will perform.
West Mills area nine miles southwest of Milford witnesses a violent dispute when a man on the road angrily grabs a load of grain pitched by Jeffer ies and Somers. He strikes Jeffer ies with a farm fork cutting his head, then knocks Somers down and gashes his cheek ear and head with the tines. The injured youths are taken to town for treatment.
In Lincoln Nebraska on July 26 1901 Governor Ezra P Savage issues executive order responding to clergy requests to designate a day for prayer. The proclamation calls upon citizens to set aside a day to gather in homes and collectively offer divine aid across the state.
Cresceus the world champion trotting stallion trotted a mile in 2 02 4 at Cleveland to break the world trotting record, surpassing The Abbott 2 03 34 as 10,000 spectators roared. Ketcham and Cresceus received an ovation with the crowd lifting the horse’s driver to the stands.
Mrs Jerome finds a man hanging from a tree in a Merrick county grove near Chapman Nebraska. The body emitted a strong odor and was located while she picked wood. Shoes lay beside the tree. The deceased was last seen July 10 and was a slight local acquaintance.
A Tien Tsin dispatch notes European publics expect a quick flare up of trouble dependent on firm posture of powers. The Chinese show no sign of being overawed or repentant as Li Hung Chang allegedly adopts an off-hand tone toward a provisional government member and suggests exiting the government soon. Telegraph wires are reportedly being considered for cutting by Chinese officials.
Charles Kelmer shot himself in his 4528 North Fortieth street residence in front of his sewing wife on Saturday July 20 after a court injunction connected to divorce action. He left a life insurance policy for his wife and was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.
Fred Meehan of Omaha was stabbed by Roy Bangan during a quarrel over a penny after a craps game. Bangan, a paroled inmate from the Kearney Industrial School, drew a knife and narrowly missed Meehan's throat.
A blaze in the Laclede hotel at Ottawa Iowa caused the death of John O Connor of Mt Pleasant Iowa. The property loss was nominal and eighteen guests escaped with narrow margins.
In Cleveland Mississippi Jesse Phillips an African American who shot and killed plantation manager Lucius Reed was captured by a mob and lynched. In Lincoln Illinois Charles Baughan was fatally shot during a street fight by J W Riddle and several others were arrested. Walter J McVicker Nebraska was bitten by a rattlesnake while harvesting. condition serious but not fatal. A 12 year old Hal Richards was kidnapped then escaped near Marshalltown Iowa. Pat Haley Bradley Mills and Arthur Murphy were arrested at Stevens Point Wisconsin for complicity in the torture and murder of Thomas Davis found in an alley.
Beatrice area reports W H Otto loses about 300 head when cattle escaped through a fence into a Kaffir dormiate field. Many dead and dying animals litter miles of road, with heavy losses expected for Mr Otto.
In Clay Center Nebraska maid Maud Secord, oldest daughter of Sheriff Secord, was badly burned in a fire believed caused by stepping on a match. Mrs Secord, trying to help, was severely burned and in critical condition with nervous prostration. Little hope remains for Maud's recovery.
Wenzel Knoll an Argo starch factory employee at Nebraska City was run down and killed by four lone engines on the Burlington line. He was on a switch near the Burlington depot when the engines backed in the same direction. The body was taken to the round house, a physician and the coroner were summoned, and life was extinct about fifteen minutes after arrival.
Registration closed with totals reaching 16 006 in both districts. The Lone Wolf group and other Indians sought a court order to halt settlement on Kiowa Comanche and Apache lands. Judge Irwin said a decision would come on Monday.
The Central hotel at Blue Springs Nebraska caught fire due to a defective flue. The structure was badly damaged and contents soaked. Total loss about 1000 dollars with 750 dollars insured. Building owned and occupied by J. E. Coger.
Charles McClumsey shot and killed his sweetheart at a Spirit Lake restaurant, then turned the revolver on himself. The woman was not fatally wounded, but McClumsey died later. The pair had been engaged but broke off their engagement recently.
Report from Great Falls Montana states James Winters was assassinated at his Sandusky area ranch. Authorities believe Kid Curry, famed train robber, killed Winters. A posse forms to pursue the suspected murderer amid nationwide excitement.
A complaint charging insanity will be filed against George Staley who was brought in from Bennington a few days ago. He is a stranger, recently from Pittsburg, and attempted to walk to Bennington from the end of the street car line at Benson, but was overcome by the heat.
