Arthur Hay Serious Injured In Farm Accident

Arthur Hay of near Aurora was brought to Concordia hospital after a farm accident last Friday. A team of horses he was working with ran away, he stepped in front of them during a rest, was knocked down and dragged, suffering a fractured skull with front and back compound fractures. An operation was performed and his chances for recovery are reported as good.

After thirty seven months of publishing the Journal editors B W Selin and Jake P Storer Jr relinquish control to Louis Stofer starting May first. Stofer, educated at Scandia high school and the University of Nebraska, is praised for ability and personality. District Court Opens in Belleville Monday

The regular May term of the district court opens Monday at 10 o clock in Belleville. A number of cases will be tried. The murder charge against Mrs Edith Garter in the Merritt Sigsbee death has been dismissed, which may reduce jury caseload. John Fred Lund, acquitted at the October term, is cited as influence on the state's action regarding the Carter charges.

New Linotype Operator Hired at Journal

Kenneth Hoffman took the place of Ralph Clark at the Journal office last Monday morning. Clark left to join the Grand Island Nebraska Herald. Hoffman is a Pittsburg State Teachers College graduate highly recommended. Thornton Doctor, previously part time, will devote more time to the Journal and substitute at the Phillips 66 station.

West begins campaign for governor with southwestern tour

W. G. West, Republican candidate for governor, resumes campaign with a speech at Quivira Lakes then plans a through tour of southwestern Kansas. Opening in Dodge City on May 5, he expects to cover 15 counties during the first week.

Plan to form Riverview Cemetery District advances

Fisherman Catches Two-Foot Sturgeon in Local River

John Tingstrom, a Sturgeon fisherman, hauled a two-foot sturgeon weighing about two pounds from the river last Friday morning. Sturgeon sightings are rare in this stretch, and the fish may have come up from the Kaw or Missouri rivers, per the Republican.

Charley Leweke Taken by Death at Belleville

Charley Leweke age 75 formerly of Mrs. A. M. Bettis home died Sunday in Belleville after a long illness his eyesight long failing. Survived by brother H Leweke Courtland and sister Mrs A M Bettis Scandia. Funeral services held at the Methodist church Tuesday with Rev B W Selin officiating. Interment in Courtland cemetery.
