Retired Colonel Henry J. Hunt former governor of the National Home for Disabled Veterans in the District of Columbia died at age 68. He had served as governor of the home for about four years. The piece also notes local G A R activity in Topeka and Emporia including plans for a grand army hall, officers elected, and improvements funded by L I Heritage.

American baseball players travel from Egypt to Italy with manager Stamford Parry proposing to use the Colosseum ruins as a backstop. The government balks at playing amid mummies, and Parry shifts aim to Rome and Vienna as the tour proceeds, with financial reception mixed in Egypt and Europe.
Rep Grosvenor introduced a resolution in Washington DC to probe the Arkansas Second district contest that followed the assassination of John M Clayton. The measure creates a five member Elections Committee to collect testimony, determine election validity, and report to the Fifty-first Congress with high privilege status.
Indianapolis February 12 There is steady flow of visitors at the Harrison residence as General Harrison nears completion of his cabinet. Some eight may receive formal invitations. emphasis shifts to the inaugural address while Mrs. Harrison handles letters seeking offices or aid, but requests for character references are discarded.
The Republic reports strong reasons General Boulanger will wed Joseph Lucas’s divorced wife, Jannie McLaren, after a possible divorce from his own wife. McLaren, daughter of Colonel Charles McLaren of St Louis, married Lucas in a unhappy union and later separated, living in Europe. The pair reportedly met in New York in 1881 and reconnected in Europe as McLaren traveled in Italy.
Charles F. Lummis, renowned descriptive writer for several eastern papers, was shot in the face and head by an unknown assailant at the Atlantic and Pacific junction on February 19. The condition and motive are not yet known.
The injured man was carried to Islets Indian village in precarious condition after an attack. The telegraph for a physician was countermanded, as Lummis’s wounds were deemed fatal. He had spent the last year at San Mateo Valencia County writing articles. Authorities suspect his writings provoked revenge and linked him to the Murchison letter to Lord Sackville West.
Governor Larrabee named in Polk County grand jury indictment for circulating a pamphlet accusing Mrs Turney of having two husbands living. The case ties to Chester Turvey a youth with a fourteen conviction record and current penitentiary sentence. Indictment vote was six to five. no arrest yet.
A blast between William Bridge and Ledford Park on the New York New Haven Hartford line as a Stamford bound train passed at 0 40 a m shatters all tram glass and injures many with head and facial cuts though no serious injuries reported.
In Dakotas February 19 Sheriff Flynn seized horses belonging to a half breed. A mounted band of half breeds overtook him near town, took the horses, fired shots, and rode away. Dakota National Guards with the sheriff proceed to Dunseith to arrest participants. Indignation and risk to white settlers fear bloodshed if invasion continues.
Susie B ten, daughter of Colonel Anthony, and Edwin Vieree, son of C B Pierce, drowned while skating on a pond at J C Stone farm four miles south of Leavenworth Kansas. Grace Phillips and Harry Jewitt were rescued after being thrown in, but saved with strenuous efforts. the two who died were recovered after sinking.
New York reports the visible grain supply afloat and in store on February 9. Wheat totals 6,034,100 bushels afloat and in store, down 683,000. Corn 14,035,108 bushels, up 711,000. Oats 5,079,289 bushels, up 14,983. Rye 1,607,915 bushels, down 115,000. Barley 2036,805 bushels, down 147,000.
Frank Vanmeater found guilty of blowing up the Dunkard church at Buffalo in 1887. In Judge Stillwell's court he was sentenced to one year in county jail and a $500 fine. After release he must post a $300 bond for good behavior. the crime is a misdemeanor under state law.
Representative Norwood of Georgia submits a detailed minority report opposing the house passed senate Panama canal resolution. He calls it a false declaration and misapplies the Monroe doctrine, targets a sister republic, and commits the US to an impolitic untenable position. He suggests thrift may outweigh patriotism in the measure.
News from San Francisco reports the schooner Casco reached Honolulu on January 14 with novelist Robert Louis Stevenson and his family. He chartered the yacht for a South Sea cruise to study islanders and legends, promising new material for publishers.
Secretary Whitney tells the House Naval Committee he believes the vessel Thomas designed, criticized in the Senate, would be of great value to the navy and that he would build it if he were secretary when the bill takes effect.
In St Joseph Missouri on February 18 Democrats of the Fourth district nominated on the second ballot R P Wilson of Platt county to fill the Fifty First Congress vacancy caused by the death of James N Burnes. For the short term in the Fiftieth Congress Charles Fk Booker of Andrew county was named.
Word from Horousinion Kansas reports the arrest of J M Spurgin in Elgin near the Indian Territory. Spurgin departed with 20 horses mortgaged for 2000 dollars and was bound for Oklahoma.
Representative Crisp reported favorably the senate bill authorizing construction of a bridge over the Missouri river not over ten miles above the Hannibal and St. Joe railway bridge at Kansas City.
Col onel Lamont announces he will assume the post of president of the Avenue Street Railway Company in New York City after March 4. The statement was made in Washington on February 18.
Ex United States consul to Chihuahua Mr Jones and three of his children Alice Tinkey and Dudley along with Wade Witt ten year old neighbor perish in a sand cave at Yslota Texas. Jones and his son attempted a rescue but were buried as a second avalanche struck. The town mourns with a large funeral and mourning families.
At the national prohibitionists conference in Louisville on February 16 a Georgia professor’s paper argued local option hinders prohibition and national prohibition should be pursued. Miss Willard and other leaders endorsed the paper. A plan to reorganize the party and a four fifths threshold failed. Several addresses followed, including on high license failure and women’s work.
An intimate friend explains Blaine's acceptance of the state secretary post after a Harrison letter on December 1. Blaine reportedly asked not to influence other cabinet picks and declined Indianapolis talks to avoid gossip. No further communication occurred between Blaine and Harrison afterward.
Governor Church reports danger of disturbance among half-breed Indians in Bartlett county. Militia company at St Johns ordered out by sheriff, though governor says sheriff had no authority. Secretary of the Interior and War Department alerted to prevent outbreak.
O K Green manager of the 2 000 000 acre Hacienda de Istro in Chihuahua arrived in El Paso on his way to England to press a plan for exclusive artesian wells across Durango Chihuahua and Coahuila. He seeks capital to develop districts with water and opponents fear a foreign monopoly. In Washington a Spooner bill proposes a national system of farmers institutes with a salaried superintendent and regular meetings to share agricultural experiments.
The proposal sets a cap of 500 000 dollars annually for the institute system excluding permanent calories and report printing. A sub committee of veterans from Chic amauga plans a joint memorial association with fifty leaders named from both sides and several prominent civilians to preserve and mark the battlefield. Senator Colquitt will prepare the incorporation under Georgia law.
A. C. Webster reports Montana cattle suffer water scarcity as streams freeze and no snow falls. He warns a late month storm or March could trigger heavy cattle losses on northern ranges, despite mild springlike weather.
The Personal Rights League formed in Chicago vows to resist the prohibition movement. With headquarters at 226 Dearborn Street the group issues an address urging citizens to join and form local assemblies under the parent organization's plan.
The annual Iowa department Grand Army of the Republic encampment will be held in Burlington from April 8 for four days. The department has grown by over 2,000 members in the last quarter, totaling more than 20,000. The Women’s Relief Corps will meet concurrently, and a decorated special train will operate across the state from Council Bluffs to Burlington for their use.
Cattle rates set by the Southwestern association after the Western and Northwestern actions. New rules post February 15 govern transportation of handlers for stock cars. One man one way for one car, one man both ways for two cars, two men both ways for four cars, and three men both ways for eight or more cars.

Saloons at Badger Duncombe Lehigh and Barnum were raided with liquor spilled. no action yet in the city with thirteen open saloons though measures are planned.
Barrington reports a flood of grain from the west and southwest reaching market after months in reserve. Hundreds of cars have arrived daily for a week from the O. B. Q. western line, the B. C. R. N., and the C. B. N. shipments are noted as moving rapidly.
The Star reports that Dr. Rogers in the Pan-Electric case intends to summon President Cleveland after March 4 to testify about statements regarding the Pan-Wleotio company allegedly made to the president by Garland Caste Young Senator Harris and others.
Washington February 16 Senator Palmer from the committee on agriculture and forestry reports favorably an amendment to the agricultural appropriation bill. It would provide the agriculture committee with 100000 dollars to continue experiments in producing and manufacturing sugar from sorghum cane and beets.
Washington February 16. A reunion of the paymasters of the army who served during the war of the rebellion will be held at the Ebbett house on March 5 1889. The secretary’s address is Colonel Thomas H Gardner No 1005 F street northwest Washington D C.

The House passed a bill to divide the Sioux reservation and instructed conferees to defer to the Senate on New Mexico fee removal from the territorial omnibus bill.
