Republic Wildcats overcome Swedes with early 72 yard touchdown by Elvin Ball. Swedes struggle with passing defense and costly fumbles as Republic edges ahead and holds on for a windy, hard fought win at Scandia.
Third year ethics courses opened at Scandia High with Rev. Englund and Rev. Linerson teaching the Junior Senior and Sophomore Freshmen groups. Miss Nichols supervises Senior Junior and Sophomore Freshman classes. First session Friday September 22 discussed ideal Bible characters. Weekly Friday meetings expected to benefit students as in prior years.
Season tickets for the four home games go on sale at eighty cents for adults and forty cents for high school students. See any football boy for tickets and join boosters for 8. Subscriptions to the Scandia High News are 50 cents a year, available via Journalism Class members.
The 1939 notice lists Clyde at night on Sept 29 and Glasco at home on Oct 6, indicating upcoming Scandia Swedes events with locations and dates.
The P T A met in the high school auditorium Sept 19 at eight for a well attended program. Rev Englund gave the invocation after music by the band and group singing led by Ruthman. Mrs Greenslade read the secretary's report and Mrs Nelson, vice president, installed Mrs Nate Smith as president. Jessie Nichol introduced teachers, Mrs Joseph Englund spoke on Why Belong to P T A, and Paul Albro and Warren Nelson performed an instrumental duet. Home economics girls displayed canned goods and a lunch was served by a committee led by Mrs McDowell.
Mr. Henderson represented Hover Company and showed the Standard fluid process duplicator to the board of education and faculty on Wednesday, with the result that the school is happy about the purchase. The article notes the duplicator is used by many larger schools.
Sponsors appointed for each class and students elected to posts. Senior Valjean Jackson leads with LaVon Bowersox as VP and Harold Johnson as Reporter. Juniors choose Betty Irene Larson as President and Bud Swanson as Secretary. Sophomores elect Donald Anderson as President and Frank Larson as Secretary. Freshmen name Phyllis Marshall as President and Lawrence Nelson as VP with Ruth Larson as Secretary. Reporter yet to be chosen.
After a period of anxious waiting, the seniors came to school Monday morning sporting their new rings. Some chose white gold background, others black onyx with golden S. H. S. in the middle. The seniors are justly proud of these emblems representing their class.
Students of Scandia High School form a school newspaper to publish editorials feature articles social news and financially sustain the paper for the Scandia community and neighboring states in Kansas.
The Scandia school opened September 4 with a large enrolment in both high school and grades. It holds a class A rating in the North Central Association and offers Vocational Home Economics, Vocational Agriculture, Commerce, Journalism, College Preparatory and general courses. The activity program includes music, athletics, drama, and a postgraduate course. The gym has been renovated with a new paint coat, refinished bleachers, a fine stage with lights, two dressing rooms, and scenic backgrounds for dramatic and musical work. New faculty include Ruby Johnson, Esther Sjogren, Evelyn Neander, Otis Roges, Luella Ruthman, Fred Reasoner, and others, with Hodges as superintendent and social science teacher.
October events include Y W meeting on October 5 and visits to Glasco Gypsum Mankato Wakefield on dates listed. P T A meeting is set for October 17 with local participation at home or away venues as noted.
Superintendent William E Hodges offers a warm welcome to students for the 1939 1940 school year. He invites participation in educational social musical and athletic programs and promises faculty support to help students meet challenges and make this the most successful year in Scandia Schools.
The upper classmen staged a Friday initiation on September 8 welcoming new students. Freshmen wore cross gender attire and painted faces while performing a three raw eggs stunt. They paraded through the business district and then joined faculty and students for a social watermelon feed at Joe Johnson's home.
