Rev M C Linnerson will deliver the sermon at the high school auditorium Sunday May 23 at eight o clock. The program includes processional music by Miss Cornelia Furry and group singing with Invocations scripture readings and multiple choral numbers by SHS groups and guest readers.
Kansas State Board of Vocational Education tentatively approves half time Vocational Home Economics for Scandia High School girls next year. Miss Trella Reiber remains instructor and 150 minutes daily will be spent on class and project work. The program aims to prepare students for home management and family roles with state supervision and some salary/equipment reimbursements.
The Hi-Y cabinet voted to send Eldon Larson and Leo Johnson as Scandia representatives to Camp Wood near Elmdale from June 30 to July 8. Funds were raised by a Hi-Y sponsored picture show in March. This marks Scandia’s first camp representation in several years.
At a meeting of the two athletic coaches Ralph Doc Jensen was chosen track captain and George Thompson basketball captain for the 1987 88 year Virginia Lee Marshall and Vivian Néleon were noted as captains of track and basketball respectively.
Fifteen pupils of the high school grade will be presented diplomas at the commencement program in the school auditorium at eight o'clock Wednesday May 25. Under Herbert Shde the program includes processional by Miss Cornelia Furry invocation by Rev M C Linerson salutatory Ada Isaacson class history Donald Anderson and others with music by the Perry sisters Mahan and Nelson. Class motto For the Stars Through Difficulties class colors rose and white class flower carnation officers include Donald Anderson president Paul Albro vice president Maxine Perry secretary Warren Nelson treasurer.
Supt. F. L. Miller offers farewell wishes to Grady High School students and teachers at commencement. He speaks of happy days shared, hopes for a joyful future, and urges continued self-improvement and pursuit of worthy goals.
The Scandia high school seniors face a puzzling mystery as the junior class suddenly grows quiet. Writers tease clues and describe sleuthing as detectives find hints about the upcoming junior senior banquet and annual happenings.
The graduation ceremony occurs Thursday May 26 in the school auditorium. Diplomas will be awarded and William C Hanson will give the address Our Unrepressed Industry. The program includes processional Largo Handel orchestra songs and diploma presentations by Ernest Nelson. Eighteen seniors receive diplomas led by valedictorian Alice Colelazier and salutatorian Arlene Hugos with classmates Arlene Brown and others.
Businessmen of Scandia sponsored a two night minstrel show on May 12 and 13 directed by E. C. Wires. Rainy weather hindered attendance, but the event raised nearly $100 for the new band.
Corinne Naslund has entered an essay in the American Youth Forum contest sponsored by American Magazine. The topic is The America I Want and essays may not exceed 2500 words. Naslund’s excerpt speaks of united citizenship, concern for poverty, and equal birthright to wealth and opportunity.
The High News earned a Second Class Honor Rating from the National Scholastic Press Association. Ten judges assessed recent issues for high editorial standards and quality, noting marked improvement and an excellent rating for the editorial column. The association is based in Minneapolis.
