Hosanna Cantata Planned For Scandia High March 21
Scandia High School music interest rises with 34 boys in the glee club 31 girls in another club 32 in the orchestra 12 grade students. A mixed chorus of 24 and a Music Club of 12 girls were formed. Two beginner piano classes for grade children and free private instruction are offered. New instruments include a bass drum snare drum and tuba. Hosanna by Roy E Nolte is the Easter Cantata directed by Miss Cornelia Furry with Mavis Freed as accompanist. Scandia will attend the Belleville Music Festival in March.

Reverend Conn Speaks on Patriotism at PTA Program
The January 21 PTA program opened with singing and invocation. Reverend Conn delivered the patriotism themed address followed by a trombone solo by Herbert Johnson and a Kansas agriculture paper read by Marie Jensen. A vocal duet by Norma Aspegren and Ruth Ahrens, Reverend Conn's address, a girls' glee club number, and a photo show by Mr. Miller completed the event.

In the county annual Christmas seal sale Grades of Scandia ranked first for the second year. Proceeds aid tuberculosis prevention in Kansas. Groups raised: first and second 1.28 dollars, third and fourth 3.83, fifth and sixth 2.34, seventh and eighth 2.32. Total 9.77 dollars from Thanksgiving to Christmas.

Senior class member leaves for California
Frances Cooper a Scandia High School senior left last Saturday for California to attend Monrovia High School. She previously attended there as a sophomore and was active in Glee Club Pep Club Girl Reserve basketball Music Club and served as librarian this year. She will be missed by schoolmates who wish her luck in her new home in California.

Fourteen students earn semester honors with seven seniors on the list. Seniors lead with Mildred Johnson Jim mie Larsen Frances Cooper and others. Juniors, sophomores, and freshmen fill the rest, while ten holdover students return from last year’s roll. Four students receive honorable mention across grades.
Scandia High News Joins National Scholastic Contest
For the ninth straight year Scandia High News competes in the National Scholastic Press Association contest. Results will be announced in April with a score book giving ratings and criticisms to aid future journalism work. The first four issues were submitted for critique by journalism authorities to raise standards. Last year the paper earned a second class honor rating.

Hi Y Boys Plan Bean Feed for Wednesday
Hi Y boys will hold a bean feed on Wednesday February 8. The plan was decided at the January 28 Hi Y meeting with expenses covered by the organization funds. Bill Reece led the session and reports from the State Hi Y Convention at Salina were reviewed. John Nylund and Jimmie Larsen led singing and the benediction was given.

Scandia to Host Class B Elimination Tournament
Scandia has been chosen as a center for the Class B state elimination basketball tournaments to be held March 4 5 and 6 under the Kansas State High School Athletic Association with E A Thomas as executive secretary. Local high schools will be assigned to the Scandia site. A new ruling limits teams to one game per day and most games will be at night.

Reverend Linnerson Defines Faith in Chapel Program
In a chapel talk on Wednesday January 27 Reverend Linnerson defines faith as the assurance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Scandia Flying Swedes Win Debut Victory Over Republic Wildcats
Scandia's Flying Swedes defeated Republic Wildcats 36 to 18 on Tuesday January 26 on a foreign court. Johnny and Lindy led scoring with a 15 7 halftime edge and the team built the lead in the second half. The second team beat Republic seconds 12 to 5 while Scandia girls fell 39 to 8 to Republic City with Vera Flesher Virginia Marshall Arlene Hugos Mona Hohman and Fern Thomas among players noted.

Pictures Shown to Students in Assembly in Kansas
In the general assembly on Wednesday January 20 two reels of moving pictures Outposts of Old Glory and the Silk Industry were shown to high school students. A series of Truthful James Stories about odd Kansas experiences were read by Eldon Larson Bill Goodwin and Leo Johnson.
