Vetoed Public Lands Grant for Insane As a West Issue

The President vetoed the bill to grant ten million acres of public lands to states for the insane benefit. The veto message argues constitutional concerns and notes injustice to western interests. Eastern states demand equal land division or sale proceeds for common treasury. Milwaukee Sentinel opposes land grants for railroads while favoring landless policies.

Great Storm at Albany and Across the Region

Albany faced a severe storm on the 29th with the Quay submerged a fathom water covered streets and a canallike flood extending Maiden Lane Dean Street and South Broadway. Bridges transformed the riverfront and canal boats appeared at back windows while vessels drifted toward New York. The storm disrupted canals roads and rail lines from Albany to Syracuse and New York City with fatalities reported in Brooklyn and widespread property damage. Congress in Washington debated adjournment with heightened anti-Nebraska tensions and rapid-fire party watches as sessions lingered into the night.
