Sarasota Board of Trade met in regular session on Monday November 8 1918 with Dr Jack Halton as president. Items included flood prevention legislation support, park proposition discussions, officer elections delayed, and golf ground work progress.
An optimistic look at Sarasota strawberry potential notes early ripening berries in Bungalow Hill and Price farm plots. A. D. Albritton expands to about 203000 Klondyke plants with year round production, while Plant City shipments and imports from elsewhere highlight local infancy and future promise for steady local supply and profits.
Workers at the waterfront are seen actively hauling compact loads of black soil and grass. The scene shows multiple crews moving materials along the dock area preparing for landscaping and drainage work. Local officials supervise the operation as trucks unload cargo.
Park grounds in front of Belle Haven Inn are leveled and planted by the Woman's Club and volunteers. Palm trees are set, grass laid, water pipes installed, and a district-wide beautifying effort urged as part of Sarasota’s developing bayfront view.
Adjourned regular council meeting discusses ice plant issue with Mr Ludwig to repair boiler blow-off and improve ice loading. Motion by Bierseth to order a six foot sidewalk along the street pending further action.
Jor Gillespie announced at the Board of Trade that the eighteen hole course is being prepared and should be ready for visitors in about two weeks though not yet in prime condition. A local club will form with a $10 subscriber base and a committee aims to reach twenty five members. Members of recognized clubs may pay $10 for the season or 5 a month 2 a week or 50c a day to play Sarasota links.
At the annual meeting in Sarasota the club elected Commodore James E. Moore Vice Commodore W F Purdy Treasurer J J Merrill Secretary R W Grenton and a six member Board of Governors including Honoré Palmer R E Ludwig Col J B Fletcher I R Burns A B Edwards and J W Ponder J G Campbell. The brick paving will extend across the grounds with the city’s share funded temporarily by the club The grounds will gain a curved shell drive with concrete curbing to provide turning and parking for cars and carriages.
Guidance to citrus growers urges shipping mature colored fruit, noting green fruit often yields low returns. It advises selling large oranges and delaying small fruit until after holidays, with a forecast of heavy early shipments depressing prices. Emphasizes targeting Royals and Triumph varieties and avoiding smaller fruit until colored.
Commissioners met on November 3 1913 with Chairman G W Blackburn approving bills for culverts and labor on the Osprey road and a paralyzed worker’s pension. A $25 reward was offered for evidence in sign board vandalism as bids for old county buildings and jail fixtures were discussed for a November 10 session.
The Sarasota Otrus Growers Association will open the packing house Monday with early fruit shipments starting now. A larger force will be assigned for picking and packing through Christmas to meet expected demand.
The proprietor S. W. Hunton announces the Mango avenue hotel will open on November 15.
