Reports from anglers indicate tarpon fishing has improved since the season opened with catches varying in weight and size. Several boats posted multiple tarpon in the 60 to 120 pound range, and a few larger specimens were landed on light tackle near the mouth of the river.
Belle Haven Inn hosts visitors from Baltimore and Birmingham for tarpon season. Dr. Jack Halton travels to Tampa, cows breach the Inn fence causing shrubbery damage, and tarpon scales are used for contractor badges at a Tampa convention. A tarpon book records catches, with Sarasota praised as prime fishing near the hotel.
The Episcopal church guild shared three months of reunions ending with a picnic at Mr. Ben Stickney's place. Moonlit oaks near the Gulf framed a memorable outing. Hostesses Mrs. Jack Halton and Dr. Jack Halton provided luncheon, closing with thanks and anticipation of another gala day.
Seaboard Air Line passenger agent O M Dickerson returned from a Sarasota trip where he tried for tarpon. He credits Paul Noble of Sarasota with landing the biggest tarpon yet labeled in the area, weighing 885 pounds, and notes the feat for the prized fish.
The Sarasota post office handled 21 636 pieces of mail in May including 18 994 first class items and 4 372 third class magazines and mail matter. Fourth class items totaled 175 including packages and merchandise. There were 159 registered letters and 88 foreign letters, reflecting typical summer activity levels for a third class office.
The Palmetto News notes J. M. Towne began work last week on the Palmetto end of the river road while Hillsborough county is expected to complete its segment promptly. The project will give Tampa a key feeder for commerce and provide Manatee farmers a nearer market, expanding automobilist access to a fruitful Florida region.
The Florida development as a resort is in its infancy and will hinge on climate as the main draw for winter tourists rest seekers recreation and health travelers. The state offers semi tropical foliage lakes rivers and coasts while promising diverse employment in fruit growing trucking agriculture and urban work amid growing wealth.

People who won prizes at the 1908 and 1909 Tampa State fairs and hold their prize certificates may receive the payout. Endorse and send to State Comptroller A C Croom in Tallahassee or deposit with a local bank for collection. A $30 000 fund is allocated by the legislature for premium payments. Do not send certificates to W G Brorein trustee of the Florida Mid Winter Fair Association.
At the request of the Confederate Veterans of Manatee County a meeting of all Camp members is invited at the courthouse at 10 o'clock a m next Saturday June 10 to transact business of great importance to the body.
The Board of Trade plans a holiday to be celebrated by all who can take part in Tarpon fishing, inviting widespread participation and recognizing the sea sport.
