Officials announce proposed changes to fishing regulations to be amended alongside neighboring cities. The plan aims to standardize limits and seasons across jurisdictions, with public input requested at hearings in multiple municipalities.
President J H Lord of the Sarasota Board of Trade submits proposed fish law amendments to Secretary Dickie of the Tampa Board of Trade. The measures aim to curb selfish fishing and protect the stock, setting net size and mesh rules, length limits, a mullet closed season, and carrier transport provisions with penalties and enforcement details.
The Tourist Club of Tampa brought 211 members from nearly every state to Sarasota by Seaboard Air Line. The reception saw broad local support with cars donated by residents and led by Mr. S. G. Linderbeck. Officials praised his coordination and the club's Ohio leaders Dr. C. J. Skinner and Dr. Brooks aided the visit.
Pageant organizers announce arrangements for next week as the Sara de Soto event nears. Officials praise the effort and anticipate strong attendance and community support.
Sarasota prepares a grand Sara DeSoto pageant across February 26 to March 3 with a Five Points stage, a King and Queen election, and a masque ball. The program includes parades, dances, ship landing re enactments, and multiple daily performances led by Mrs. Neal Wyatt Chapline and local organizers. Special trains from Tampa plus frequent band concerts aim to draw large crowds.
Major General Frederick Funston dies at San Antonio Texas on February 19 at age 51. He led forces on the Mexican border and had long service since the Spanish American War. General Pershing to succeed him on the border duties.
A sequence of free performances will boost the carnival atmosphere during the week. The parade begins Gulf Stream Avenue and Main Street to Mango and Ninth streets, Pineapple Avenue, back to Gulf Stream, then countermarch to Five Points for the Star Spangled Banner. Chief Marshal J Beresford Prior leads the event with divisions including Military and Landing Party, Minstrel and Secret Societies, Woman's Club and school children, and Floats.
The 30 foot naval militia cutter will serve as the funeral barge and the ballot box is at Badger Pharmacy for ballot casting all day. Edward C. Warren plans to defend his cup and enter two boats, while a tilting tournament is set for 2:30 PM Wednesday at Palmer Park East Main. James Moore of Tampa will present shows Monday with top quality acts. To vote for Queen of the Carnival, voters must deposit a vote with a five cent piece to complete the act.
The golf tournament starts at 9:00 and continues throughout the day on Tuesday. Construction on the Clubhouse began last Monday and will be rushed to completion. The Baybridge dedication follows the merchants parade at 2:30 on Friday. All city merchants signed the petition and will join the parade. Decorator Max Floun works on the Arcade and the Sarasota Furniture building. finishing by Saturday night or early Monday with street decorations complete.
Ballot box for Queen of the Carnival accepts five entrants, Elizabeth Sherwood Annie Hunton and May Fisher. Each vote costs five cents and the box closes Saturday at 8:00 PM. Winner announced Wednesday Feb 28 by I R Burns Clarence Hitchings and John W Knox. The King ballot results will be announced Saturday by the entertainment committee.
The Sarasota city council adjourns to accept R. C. Bruce resignation and appoint Harry C. Green Jr. as Public Works Commissioner. Officers review minutes, payrolls, pier repairs, carnival plans, and February salary questions amid routine votes and a $50 carnival grant.
National Guard units on the Texas border will begin returning home with Florida troops among the first to depart. By March 7 only the regular army remains stationed at the border.
