The Western Electric and CWA dispute sparked suspensions at Southern Bell for crossing lines. The walkout threatened by Western Electric installers could prompt grievances, with pickets at 120 locations and remarks from Chattanooga and Atlanta officials.
First testimony on the Sarasota-Manatee Airport Authority vs Harrells Candy Kitchen Inc argues the 41 foot tower atop a north trail site encroaches on the glide path of the runway. Witnesses include Marion Wellford and Matt Pilcher who cite zoning regs and a 40 to 1 glide slope.
A four day strike by 23 800 telephone equipment installers ended with a new contract. A CWA official said many returning workers were dissatisfied and would likely reject the agreement. Aimed at the union's top leadership, the report sparks calls for action and possible expulsion at a New York meeting next Tuesday. Hoffa and Beck defend remaining in the AFL-CIO.
The Weather Bureau warned that Hurricane Carrie remained dangerous with winds up to 80 mph. Located about 925 miles east of Bermuda, it moves east southeast at 14 mph and covers a 200 to 300 mile radius. Gale and hurricane force winds extend outward, and the storm is expected to hold size and gradually weaken while turning east in the next 12 hours.
BRADENTON One of Florida west coast traffic bottlenecks may vanish if Al Rogero district member of the Florida State Chamber of Commerce is right. He told a district meeting that Highways U S 41 and 301 would be four laned from Tampa southward to Sarasota within five years.

Sixteen city policemen were to receive Asian flu shots as part of a priority program begun this week with arriving serum. Police Chief Robert Wilson said the goal is to vaccinate the entire 36 member force, with remaining officers to be vaccinated this week. Deputies and other essential workers will follow as vaccines arrive, with priority cards issued to about 1,700 workers including police, firemen, postal staff, and hospital personnel.
In San Marino a new anticommunist government was set up to oppose the ruling Communist regime. The Communists dissolved Parliament and called elections for Nov 3 while a five-man anti-Communist executive committee was announced by Prof Federico Bigi. Guarded palace and tense standoff persisted as both sides positioned for action.
Minnie Mermaid calls for volunteers to aid the local Civil Defense program during Civil Defense Week. She urges residents to prepare for disasters much as one plans for rain with an umbrella or raincoat. Partly to mostly cloudy conditions with scattered afternoon showers are forecast for Sarasota. Highs near 87 to 92 and lows around 70 to 75 with east to southeast winds.
Officials abandoned the search for a body seen yesterday by construction workers off Longboat Key after a large-scale hunt involving police and Coast Guard. Witnesses described a clothed man or a white shirt, but authorities and crews found no trace as boats scanned the Gulf waters.
A six foot cross was set afire near the home of Dr. Harry N. Jones after he withdrew his son from an integrated school amid protests. Promises of support from Gov. McKeldin and the school board followed. No arrests were made as police investigated the scene and earlier damage included smashed school windows.
