A momentous conference brings together British Prime Minister and Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. They discuss Britain entering the European Common Market and the broader implications for Western alliance.
Sarasota officials convene at Bobby Jones Golf Club to weigh a $400000 island project at the foot of Main Street. Landscape architect Frederic Stresau presents plans for a seawall restaurant and marina docking about 100 boats. Approval could trigger demolition of the current city hall and urban renewal efforts with $70000 yearly lease for new city hall space.
Sarasota based Electra-Tronics Inc sells 60000 common shares at 3 dollars each and registers for over the counter sales under Florida Securities Commission rules becoming an early public electrical apparatus firm. Morgan uses a four place airplane to travel between Sarasota and Cape Canaveral sites. The Gainesville 5000 square foot facility will host UF research consultants.
Suspected encephalitis cases in Sarasota and Manatee counties improved today. Sarasota Memorial Hospital reported eight suspected cases, with one discharge. Of the eight, three were on the critical list, and two of those three showed good improvement.
Civil Defense Director Kuhn reports 1000 shelter spaces in Sarasota with 800 in the County Courthouse and total capacity raised to 3000 after conversions. He notes radiological monitoring gear storage needs and mentions spaces could increase further. The director presented the report at a civil defense council meeting.
Col Kendall reports U S Army Engineers recommend doubling New Pass outer channel to 12 feet deep and 150 feet wide to improve safety and reduce erosion around Siesta Key. Original 9 by 100 plan would be expanded, aiding New Pass navigation in bad weather and easing bay waters. The proposal affects intracoastal work from the Caloosahatchee to Anclote rivers.
Sarasota County GOP candidates Francis Nutto and J L Parker released a 10 point program calling for full time county commissioners. They advocate constitutional government, local rights, water management, job creating industry, fair taxes, simple zoning, and bipartisan planning to limit building costs.
Senate Armed Services Committee held a closed session as Defense Secretary McNamara outlined the President’s request to authorize 150000 ready military reservists to active duty for one year with possible one year extensions. The White House linked the proposal to tensions over Cuba and Berlin, noting it would not affect last August’s involuntary call ups.
Peiping asserted the U2 was shot down over southeast China and blamed the United States for U.S. policies. Nationalist China acknowledged owning two U2 aircraft bought from Lockheed in July 1960 and said the plane was forced to lower altitude by engine trouble or Soviet missiles.
George W. Dorn a 56 year old veteran of Korean War and World War I was named today assistant civil defense director for operations in Sarasota County. He will aid Civil Defense Director Col. William F. Kuhn and has previous service as commanding officer of a chemical procurement corps in Texas and California. Dorn retired in 1960 and has lived in Sarasota five years at 660 Corwood Dr.

A gunman robbed Carling beer distribution warehouse employees Joseph M. LaHurd and Al Abdulla at the Cal Distribution Co. office on Myrtle Street. The thief escaped with 163 dollars after tying victims in a closet and fled as deputies and bloodhounds searched near Myrtle and U.S. 301. The suspect is described as a five seven Negro in a white shirt and khaki pants.
