Federal court plan faces voter decision on November 6. If approved, Sarasota and Manatee would form new senatorial districts affecting Smyth Brohard and Ed H. Price Jr. in a potentially reconfigured 36th district.
Pinellas County reports 154 suspected cases and 12 deaths as nine new cases appear in St. Petersburg and South Florida. Officials warn conditions favor spread into other counties during September and October peak months. Mosquito transmission from birds prompts public cleanup and reduced bird feeding measures.
The Helping Hand Club of Sarasota yesterday received the first of a series of monthly checks from The Sarasota News. Dom Di Valerio, the circulation director, presented the donation as the program aims to support the organization with ongoing funding.
State Rep G M Nelson urged forming a City of Sarasota Development Authority to fund the multi million Bayfront project using tax free revenue certificates. He said the authority could be elected or city appointed and financed without new taxes, with coverage extending to surrounding areas as directed by the city commission.
An eight week commercial sign and show card lettering course will be offered again this year at the Sarasota Vocational School directed by C. A. Bellum. The class runs three hours twice weekly in room 305 starting at 7 p.m. with instructor H. D. Davis. Registration is open with a $3 enrollment fee plus materials. Additional courses for tradesmen are also available in the adult education program.
Berlin will present a broad analysis of Sarasota’s problems and prospects, comparing local conditions to a national context. The discussion titled A Bird’s Eye View vs A Bug’s Eye View of Sarasota will examine industry, growth, and civic issues.
Property owners along Phillippi Creek in the South Gate section urged larger setbacks for a nine-acre planned commercial zone and a buffer residential area. The plan, discussed before Bee Ridge Road officials, includes a 240 foot buffer to the east and 440 feet to the west bulkhead. The proposal was referred to a special three commissioner committee for investigation and report. The board also approved a highway area rezoning from residential to commercial along U S Highway 41 near Venice.
A preliminary plat for the first unit of a large mobilehome subdivision is filed with the county. National Cooperative Trailer Parks, Inc. will develop the project on property south of U.S. 41 opposite Warm Mineral Springs, extending to the Myakka River, with water and sewer to each lot and streets in conformance with regulations.
Initial plans for a new Youth Center building will be discussed at a Monday noon meeting at the airport teen center. Attendees include Bundy Knuckles Raymond Frazier Shockey Blair Tillman and Frazier chairing the building committee. A 15 by 400 foot tract donated by the city lies south of the Little League park for the center. Bundy says work starts soon and hours, volunteers, and maintenance will be reviewed. A Sept. 29 gala twist spectacular at the circus arena will be produced by A. J. Perry with three name bands from St Petersburg and net profits shared with the Youth Center. Plans call for monthly spectacles thereafter.

Christy Payne longtime Sarasota booster for the Boston Red Sox died at his home after a year and a half of illness. He was 88 and will be buried after a Monday funeral at 2 p.m. Payne helped guarantee Payne Park and the Sarasota Mobile Home Park land be used as parks. Born February 27 1874 in Butler Pennsylvania he had a long career in law and oil and served as a director and in leadership roles at Standard Oil of New Jersey before retiring in 1935.
Planning board weighs a rezoning for a shopping center on the old Ashby Court site. The developer proposes a 7.5 foot buffer, 10 foot rear setback, and a design aimed at economic feasibility while facing Norwood Court. A board field trip and additional rezoning votes are planned for nearby Siesta Drive and South Gate parcels.
