A small low pressure trough about 200 miles west of Fort Myers has weakened with no cause for concern. Shower activity persists but squalls and gusty winds that affected southern Florida Monday have cleared. Mainly partly cloudy through Wednesday with scattered afternoon showers. Highs 86 to 89, lows 70 to 74. Winds 8 to 15 mph. End time 6 a.m. today per AP.
Two U.S. Navy veterans Bernon F. Mitchell and William H. Martin vanished in the United States and appeared in Moscow claiming defection to the Soviet Union. They spoke at a Moscow press conference about U S espionage, reconnaissance flights, and alleged U S suppression of its own statements. They said they plan scientific work in Russia and became Soviet citizens.
A Sarasota man reports a six year old boy John Young rider son of Dr and Mrs Thomas R Young Jr died after riding from a driveway on Osprey Avenue into a car driven by George W Jones. Police filed no charges. UPI data show 396 traffic deaths nationwide over the 78 hour weekend. Total drownings 101 and other fatalities 82, with California and Texas posting the highest tolls.
A 900 pair wet cable on 12th Street W and Fourth Avenue W disrupted about 2 500 telephones including lines to City Police Headquarters and Central Fire Station. Emergency measures rerouted police calls from the 4th Avenue office and fire calls to Manatee No 2 Station relayed to Central Station. By 8 30 p.m. police and fire lines were restored and trunk lines followed as crews worked overnight.
Hurricane Donna with 125 mph winds remained offshore and showed no intent to threaten Florida. Forecaster Walter Davis of the Miami Weather Bureau said there is an excellent chance it will move northeast without affecting the state.
William J. Riley, Republican sheriff candidate and displaced civil defense director, accuses Sarasota County officials of political thrusts and ignorance of civil defense. He says his leave of absence to campaign is pending official notice, while he remains at the post and fights back against critics.
