Police at four beach entrances stopped cars of mixed race groups and recovered a range of guns and knives. Officers said arms could be reclaimed after a cooling-off period. The action followed a city ban on Negroes at the public beach and heightened racial tension amid a federal suit over beach access.
County plant inspectors plan a week long check of groves in Manatee and Sarasota after a suspected fruit fly larva was found in Englewood. Traps have been set across both counties and residents are urged to inspect citrus and mangoes.
About 400 tug boat workers walked off in Cleveland and other Great Lakes ports in solidarity with contract demands. The strike action was organized by the union to pressure terms negotiations.
Early returns from nationwide local elections show pro West Center parties ahead of the Communist Socialist Left. In 304 of 48,313 districts, 81,200 votes went to the Communists 26,207 to the Socialist 19,561 while the Center bloc totaled 103,309 against 45,768 for the far Left and 30,191 for the far Right. Sicily figures show Center Right gains amid scattered results. Turnout affects control of 6587 councils and provincial posts nationwide.
A Turkish Cypriot policeman was killed and two other security forces members wounded in an ambush on a convoy near Paphos. The deceased is the fifth Turkish Cypriot officer killed in the area. Commissioner Martin Clements will review clashes between Turkish and Greek Cypriots in Nicosia and an arson campaign against Greek shops. A curfew is in force in Nicosia's Turkish quarter and Afania after rioting that killed two Saturday.
Adlai E. Stevenson and Sen. Estes Kefauver wage a closing Florida campaign for 28 national convention votes in a chilly atmosphere. Kefauver plans a late-night blitz in Miami and nine Dade County towns while Stevenson seeks to extend lead perceived by Florida observers. Eisenhower remains the Republican frontrunner.
In Nazaire France a mob of about 1500 men stormed police lines and carried home a group of reservists scheduled to depart by train for service in the Mediterranean. About 200 reservists were on the train due to leave at noon. The protest began with 300 swarming tracks and ended with a walkout while expressing sympathy for those recalled to active duty.
The president arrives back in the capital with no public engagements listed amid routine property talks with neighbor George E. Allen.
In Pittsburgh the United Steelworkers and U S Steel Corp meet at the bargaining table to negotiate a new contract expected to become a pattern for the industry. John A. Stephens, head of Big Steel's 60 member negotiating committee, expressed hope for a settlement.

The derailment affected five cars.
Police reported a cross burned on the front lawn of the home of two Florida A M University students, Wilhelmina Jakes and Carrie Patterson, who were jailed after refusing to move to the rear on a city bus. Authorities investigated the motive and possible witnesses.
