Charles Gillum 17 and a 15 year old companion were charged in petty larceny for stealing newspaper racks. They confessed after arrest Saturday and led officers to 20 dumped racks. Gillum faces arraignment in county court at 3 30 p m Wednesday, with the juvenile choosing county or juvenile court.
Florida lawmakers contest Sarasota charter changes led by Rep William S Boylston who may back reforms only if put to a referendum The main target is moving city elections from December to April drawing opposition from Mayor Frederic W Dennis who argues April timing avoids campaign conflicts and aligns with voter attention
Sears Roebuck and Co will invite bids for a two story Bahia Vista Street store from June 15 onward through its Atlanta regional office. If bids are good, groundbreaking could occur late July with completion set soon after. a million dollar performance bond is planned. Local bidders include T T Watson Inc and Alfred M Rappaport. Warehouse space on Mango Avenue will be expanded to about 36000 square feet.
UPI reports a seized arms ring in Miami derailed a planned two week hence invasion of Cuba staged from the Dominican Republic. Fourteen arrested, including Dominican consul Augusto Ferrando and viceroysconsul Jose Paulino, bonds set at 25000 each. Batista reportedly not involved.
Five youths drowned when their small boat overturned off Strawberry Island in Lake St Clair. Three teenagers were rescued and treated at St Joseph Hospital Mount Clemens. Victims hailed from East Detroit and Harper Woods. names were not immediately released.

Senate conferees stood by 24 million for the school house program, while House conferees pressed for 27,876,950, with conferences delayed for a full House vote. The House committee earlier amended the Senate measure upward to nearly 28 million dollars.
Federal authorities withdraw from the Mack Charles Parker kidnapping and killing case. They will deliver a summary of information to Mississippi Governor Coleman for possible state prosecution. Parker, 23, was abducted from Pearl River County jail and killed while awaiting rape charges.
