Former President Truman claims he endorsed Averell Harriman at the 1956 Democratic convention as a maneuver to help Adlai Stevenson disassociate from him politically. He faults Stevenson for indecisiveness and campaign flaws. Truman also states he supports Symington in 1960, not changing horses midstream. A Chilean earthquake spurred tidal waves up to 32 feet that struck Pacific coastlines from Australia to Alaska. Japan bore the heaviest impact with hundreds dead or missing and thousands homeless as waves reached Honshu and other areas. Reports from Manila and Santiago note extensive damage and rising casualties across the region.
Pennsylvania State University professor Dale B Harris told the National Congress of Parents and Teachers that chores do not guarantee adult responsibility. He warned that early heavy duties may hinder some children and cited biographies of famous figures as exceptions.
