Two million dollars in construction funds for the West Coast Inland Waterway received full House Appropriations Committee approval today. A telegram from Congressman James A. Haley announced the action this morning.
Officials announce a $3,841,798,985 public works bill including two million for the Caloosahatchee to Boca Grande waterway first phase. County commissioners, the WCMD, Corps of Engineers, and Florida and federal biologists coordinate to use dredged spoil for beaches and roads while protecting fisheries. Construction could begin late 1961 with completion targeted for 1962 in Sarasota County.

Tornadoes tore through the plains and Midwest injuring and destroying in Meriden Kansas Topeka and Leavenworth. One killed at Meriden with 50 injured and the cafe owner’s body found. Red Cross sent units to Rossville and Silver Lake to aid nine homes destroyed. Winds 85 mph hit Oklahoma City lifting and dropping a steel theater roof.
London reports that Queen Mother Elizabeth planned to wed Sir Arthur Penn were denied by his lawyers as wholly unfounded. Penn’s lawyers said the New York Daily News story has no basis, while the Queen Mother tours Southern Rhodesia and rumors persist without official backing.
The U S Chamber of Commerce urged Congress to raise rates on first second and third class mail and streamline mail handling to make the Post Office Department self supporting. Verne Sullivan testified the move would wipe out the department deficit and called for modernization of about 40 000 post offices.
Aly Khan was buried today in the park of his seaside chateau at Golfe Juan after a Moslem funeral service attended only by family and close friends. The wealthy sportsman and diplomat died May 12 in an automobile accident near Paris.
Chiang Kai-shek was inaugurated in Taipei Formosa as president of the Republic of China for a third six-year term.
Thousands of leftist demonstrators clashed with police in Tokyo protesting the U S Japanese security pact. Rioters shouted anti American slogans, scaled the premier’s residence wall, damaged property, and injured at least 84 people including 18 police. Prime Minister Kishi was at his private home during the attack.
About 10,000 Zengakuren students led the outbreak while 40,000 to 50,000 anti treaty adults joined outside the Capitol. The treaty was passed in a session attended only by Liberal Democratic Party members. United States rights to hold air, ground and naval facilities were cited in opposition.

London AP Harold Macmillan disclosed Khrushchev told him the Soviet leader would not negotiate unless the United States condemned spy flights. The disclosure came as the summit opened and threatened to collapse further. Collins endorses Carlton in Florida race while McCollins aides discuss race and policy.
