About 50 leaders of the United States Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary gathered at the VFW Hall in Sarasota for the Armed Forces Week dinner honoring Joseph Vrtel who designed the 50 star flag. He credited Mrs. Elsie Bodine for promoting the flag and urged unity under God and one flag. Vrtel spoke of the flag’s history from 1497 and noted Cuba as a major near-term challenge, urging members to act as sentries for America’s heritage. Bay Haven Troop 34 members and parents attended the Sarasota District Court of Honor at the Courthouse. A total of 102 participants received 43 merit badges and multiple rank recognitions including five second class, two first class, one star, five life, and one gold eagle palm.
