Tokyo police issued a nationwide search for Shigehisa Motoyama a 32 year old dentist after the body of 7 year old Masaki Ozeki was found in an abandoned car. Motoyama was identified as an acquaintance of the boy’s parents and had demanded a ransom of about 8300 dollars before killing the child saying he could not wait any longer.
A Caravelle twin jet airliner colliding head on with a light plane 7000 feet over Paris landed safely but with a ripped fuselage and 18 injured. The light plane disintegrated. its pilot died. One Caravelle passenger died later in hospital. American passenger Arie Eisenberg, 52, of Forest Hills, N.Y., among the injured. Francois Queremont of Paris also died. Mme Jacques Sottelle injured lightly. Khrushchev’s Paris visit occurred shortly after the crash.
Nikita Khrushchev lands in East Berlin from the Paris summit, reiterating a policy of peaceful coexistence while blaming the United States for summit collapse. He meets East German leaders Grotewohl and Ulbricht and signals talks on Berlin and a possible peace treaty, avoiding new threats and aiming to calm Berlin with security measures.

In thick fog off the German coast 44 people including two women were rescued after two ships collided 12 miles from Borkum Island. A lifeboat with the women and 16 Swedish sailors was found first. the other two lifeboats carrying 26 seamen were towed after hours adrift. The Mongabara captain and first mate stayed aboard to attempt saving the vessel. The two women were the wife of the second engineer and the daughter of the first engineer.
About 2,000 students gathered at Ataturk Mausoleum in Ankara to demand freedom. Police and troops detained around 20 as tear gas dispersed smaller groups after the crowd began to reform. Remziye Baturbay led the activists, linked to the Republican Party opposing Menderes.
President Eisenhower arrived in Lisbon to a 250000 strong anti-Communist welcome and declared the summit failure should spur tighter belts and renewed effort for peace with justice and freedom. He noted Soviet tactics and said the world must persevere with the NATO partners.
Capt Herman Marks of Milwaukee, who led firing squads for Fidel Castro, has been missing since Saturday on a fishing trip with four other Americans. Reports say the group fled toward Mexico from the Isle of Pines. Partners include Jean Secon and the Perles. Secon’s status remains uncertain.
A night storm corridor across the nation’s midsection brought tornadoes high winds and hail. One man died near Tulsa when debris collapsed a car roof under a brief windburst. Severe gusts toppled a motel roof and felled power lines as storms spread toward Nebraska and the Great Lakes region.
