An owl wandered into downtown Venice and was attacked by city birds until a pedestrian rescued it. In San Francisco a monk displays an owlish look while a chimpanzee named Josephine checks on ambulance steward John Helms and tests his friendship with a thermometer.
President Eisenhower flies to Colorado for a 24 hour trip to inspect the Air Force Academy and visit his ailing mother in law Mrs John B Doud. He will greet the first graduating class and is accompanied by James H Douglas and Gen James D White along with the Eisenhowers and grandchildren. The party will stay at Denver’s Brown Palace Hotel after the academy visit.
Sarasota motorist John Joseph Hayes, 35, of 2442 Cocoanut Ave., was jailed on three charges after his car struck a parked vehicle on 27th Street. Hayes, treated at Memorial Hospital for minor injuries, faced charges including driving while intoxicated and damage to property totaling $1,400.
Elizabeth Taylor and Eddie Fisher depart Barcelona aboard a white yacht loaned by Sam Spiegel for a brief Mediterranean honeymoon. They arrived from New York and Lisbon after their Las Vegas marriage, with plans for Majorca as a likely stop. Taylor cites a weeklong trip due to movie duties and a back injury. Nearby Neelyville saw four Wray children Michael 9 Charles 7 Margie 11 Joyce 4 perish in a frame farmhouse fire after Mrs. Wray tried to rescue Toni 2. Police cite smoke inhalation as cause, while Mrs. Wray suspects faulty wiring. escape attempts prevented by flames.
An Illinois Central passenger train struck a car carrying Shelbyville high school teens near Mattoon. Six students were killed and two others critically injured. Victims include Jerry Hill 18 Eileen Moon 16 Judy Keen 18 Loraine Pfeiffer 17 and Jerry Hays 19. Injured Dorothy Thomas 18 Alvin Moon 17.
A safari style campout gathered 175 tent campers from 50 60 families at Myakka State Park Friday night and Saturday making it the park’s largest group. Park Superintendent Allen Crowley prepared to welcome them as leaders arrived Friday morning led by Forrest Falkenberry of Miami with attendees including men women and children.
